p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children’s care is carefully planned in partnership with specialist external agencies. One child said, ‘I have changed and I am enjoying my life.’ The level of support and engagement provided in the home enables children to thrive and make consistent progress towards their agreed targets.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children are in good health. They are registered with local practitioners and are supported to attend appointments and receive treatment where necessary. Staff ensure that children’s health records are consistently maintained to include a record of all inoculations, illnesses and treatments.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Education is prioritised. Since coming to live at this home, children have embraced learning opportunities and are making timely progress in reaching their educational targets. A headteacher said, ‘The home goes above and beyond to support children’s learning. We have seen continuous improvements.’

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children are provided with help and support to develop skills for independent living. This means that children can prepare meals, travel independently and manage their laundry. The children were observed to be clean, well dressed and taking pride in their appearance.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Family time is consistently promoted and planned. Care is taken to ensure that suitable venues are provided for family visits and that children receive the correct level of support to experience positive family time.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children confirm that they are consulted about all aspects of their lives. One child said, ‘This is not a foster home or a children’s home, this is my home. I feel cared for and that matters. Staff include me in everything.’

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Recreational activities are encouraged and supported. Children attend football and the gym on a regular basis and have made positive friendships in the community. The home has a broad range of books, board games and video games. Children enjoy competing with staff and with friends, who are welcomed to the home.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Children’s safety and well-being are prioritised in this home. Assessments that identify risks are robust. Staff work in partnership with external agencies to develop detailed strategies to reduce and manage risk.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Safeguarding mentors provide children with additional one-to-one support. This helps children to understand the impact of behaviours on themselves and others. Consequently, since coming to live at this home, children’s risks have significantly decreased. A professional said, ‘The outcomes for my child are vastly improved.’ Inspection report for children’s home: 2620950 4 Incidents of children being reported as missing from home have considerably reduced. This is because staff work closely with the children to help them to understand the reasons why they go missing and offer continuous support to help them overcome feelings of separation and anxiety.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Children are provided with valuable sessions that address matters such as substance misuse, criminality and healthy relationships. The manager, in partnership with external professionals, has developed learning packs for children. These packs help them to understand the impact of poor choices and promote positive future decisions.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Children are cared for by staff who are appropriately vetted before starting to work in the home. Records of staff recruitment confirm that safer recruitment policies are consistently adhered to.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The registered manager and staff team have developed a caring, supportive and aspirational culture for the children to thrive and grow. The children receive informed and consistent high-quality care.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Most staff have successfully completed a relevant childcare qualification. They receive consistent and targeted training to assist them in how they support the children. A staff member said, ‘We are a strong team who are all working hard to get the best results for the children.’

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The registered manager sets the standards for the team and leads from the front. He provides regular formal and informal supervision and guides the staff in the development of a safe and nurturing environment for children.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

There is an experienced staff team. Staff say that they are happy in their role and that there is consistent support and guidance. However, during discussions, it is evident that some newer members of staff struggle to understand social care professional terminology. This is an area for further development.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The registered manager is consistent in his approach to monitoring the quality of care provided and the positive effect that this is having on the children. However, although files and records are extremely detailed, one record regarding a child’s ‘All About Me’ information had been misplaced because it had been misfiled.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The care provided in the home is based on the theoretical framework of attachment. The team works closely to create an environment where the children are safe, valued, respected and accepted. This is evident in the progress and achievements of the children. Inspection report for children’s home: 2620950 5
