p.1

The provision requires improvement

Children are happy and settled. They enjoy the company of the childminder and are building secure attachments with her. The childminder plans activities that she knows the children will enjoy and have an interest in. However, her curriculum is not ambitious enough to help children make the best possible progress in their learning and development. Additionally, the childminder does not always assess children's development accurately. This results in some children's next steps not being identified and the childminder not supporting gaps in their learning.

The provision requires improvement

Nevertheless, the childminder creates a welcoming environment in which children explore safely and are curious in their play. She supports children's communication and language development well. The childminder provides running commentaries to help support children's growing vocabulary. Older children describe the towers they are building as 'massive'. Younger children say 'squishy' when they touch the play dough. Overall, children behave well. The childminder teaches children how to play cooperatively. She encourages them to share the tools they use during a play dough activity. This helps children learn to share toys and take turns.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder helps children to develop a love of books as one way to support their communication and language development. Children decide what books they would like the childminder to read with them. Younger children help to turn the pages and point to characters in the story. Older children make the sounds of the animals they recognise in the book. n The childminder does not consistently assess children's development accurately. Therefore, she sometimes plans and provides activities that do not focus on what individual children need to learn next. For example, the childminder wants young children to develop their mathematical skills, such as the quantity of objects, rather than support their toilet training. n The childminder does not implement a well-sequenced curriculum that helps children make good progress in all areas of learning. She focuses more on what the children are interested in and enjoy playing with. She does not plan activities

and experiences to help children narrow any gaps in their development or support the next steps in their learning consistently. n Parents' written comments are complimentary of the childminder. They praise the childminder for her help and support and for how happy their children are to attend her setting. Parents comment on how the childminder shares information with them about their child's daily activities and experiences. n The childminder helps children to develop their imaginative skills. She encourages children to come up with ideas as they play. Children talk about the snake they are going to make as they join construction bricks together. Some

27 November 2023 children talk about the pancake they are going to make as they manipulate the play dough into various shapes. n The childminder is kind and caring with children. She helps to raise their confidence and self-esteem through praise and encouragement. Sometimes, when children become frustrated during their play, the childminder gently encourages them to try to have another go. n The childminder has furthered her professional development and addressed most of the actions set at her previous inspection. For example, she accesses information on the internet and completes online training. She has improved her knowledge and practice to ensure children are safe in her care. However, there are still some areas for improvement required by her to ensure all children receive the support they need to further their learning. n The childminder makes sure children have easy access to a range of appropriate

toys and activities. Children select toys of their choice independently and seek out the childminder, such as when they need help to put on dressing-up clothes. n The childminder helps children to feel comfortable and adhere to routines. She sings as children wash their hands, and they learn to turn taps on and off and dry their hands independently. Children demonstrate previous learning as they tell visitors why it is important to wash their hands, saying, 'So it stops the germs'.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has completed training to update her knowledge and understanding of child protection and how to keep children safe. She knows what signs to look out for if she suspects a child may be at risk of harm. The childminder is clear about what procedures she must follow to ensure children's safety and welfare. This includes any concerns that a child may be at risk of extremist views and ideas. The childminder makes sure her home and garden are safe, secure, and fit for purpose. She completes daily risk assessments of the environment and takes action to minimise hazards to children. The childminder supervises children closely.
