The provision requires improvement
The childminder is clear about her curriculum intent and the skills and knowledge she wants the children to gain for their move to pre-school. She checks the progress they are making and shares information with parents and other settings children attend. This enables all adults involved to support children's development consistently and help close any emerging gaps in their learning. Children, including those who learn English as an additional language, make good progress from their differing starting points. The childminder does not effectively support all aspects of children's personal development when carrying out nappy changing routines. She does not demonstrate high standards of hygiene to the children.
p.2
The provision requires improvement
Children show they have formed positive attachments with the childminder. They are settled and at ease in her care, feel comfortable with her as they separate from their carers quickly. Children quickly settle down for a sleep when they are tired and lie on the sofa with the childminder for a story. Older children are beginning to make friendships and play together, such as showing one another their animals and the sounds they make. Younger children explore the interactive toys, showing they know that if they push the buttons, they will hear a sound.
p.2
The provision requires improvement
Children show interest in books and stories from a young age. They choose those they wish to look at and listen attentively to stories. When the story has finished, children sit and handle them correctly and 'babble', making up their own story to the pictures. Children have lots of opportunities to develop their hand muscles, such as when posting coins and threading ropes. These opportunities all help their early literacy development.

need to do better?
n The childminder has made some improvements since the last inspection. She has researched how to manage children's interactions with the dog and makes sure they are not left unsupervised with it. She encourages children not to touch the dog and has a gate to use when the dog needs to be kept separated from them, such as at mealtimes and when she must answer the door. The childminder now has a valid paediatric first aid certificate. However, she has not recognised the weaknesses in her nappy changing procedure. n Overall, the childminder supports children's self-care skills well. Children feed themselves and at a young age learn to wash their hands independently, such as before eating and after touching the dog. Older children take off their shoes and hang their coats up. However, the childminder does not follow good hygiene routines for changing dirty nappies. She does this on the sofa and other children

4 December 2023 n Children behave well. The childminder helps younger children learn the concept of sharing and taking turns sensitively, such as by offering them another of the same toy when they want one another child has. The childminder praises children for their achievements, such as when they help tidy away a puzzle and put the pieces in the box. This supports children's self-esteem. n The childminder promotes children's communication and language effectively. She uses simple words to reinforce young children's understanding and reads them stories to increase their vocabulary. The childminder responds to young children's communication. For example, when children say 'eat' she asks them if they are hungry and would like a snack, showing that she understands what they want to say. n The childminder knows the children well and follows their interests. When older children want to use pens or count, she uses this to support their learning.

However, younger children tend to explore the toys in isolation, showing clear patterns of play and learning. The childminder has not fully considered ways to successfully engage them to support their learning even further. n The childminder has signed up to an online course to support her professional development. She has attended a session on supporting children's communication and language. This has helped her monitor any emerging gaps and give parents advice on how to support their children's language development at home. n Parents and carers say they are happy with the care their children receive. They report their children have made good progress since attending, particularly in their speech when they are learning English as an additional language.

Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

Safeguarding
The childminder is suitably knowledgeable about child protection and wider safeguarding issues. She knows the reporting procedures to follow if concerned about a child's welfare or if an allegation is made. The childminder keeps up to date with her safeguarding training and now has a valid paediatric first-aid certificate as is required. The childminder helps the children learn safe behaviours. She reminds them to sit down when eating, to sit on the chair and not stand and how to interact appropriately with the dog.
