Yorkshire College of Beauty Limited Report following a monitoring visit to a ‘requires improvement’ provider

p.1

Name of lead inspector: Jonny Wright, His Majesty’s Inspector

p.1

Type of provider: Independent learning provider

p.1

Address:

Regency House Kirk Lane Yeadon Leeds LS19 7EP Monitoring visit: Yorkshire College of Beauty Limited, 1 and 2 November 2023

p.1

Context and focus of visit

Yorkshire College of Beauty Limited was inspected in October 2022. At that time, inspectors judged the overall effectiveness of the provision to require improvement.

p.2

Context and focus of visit

The focus of this monitoring visit was to evaluate the progress that leaders and managers have made in resolving the main areas for improvement identified at the previous inspection.

p.2

Reasonable progress

Leaders have invested in the full refurbishment of their premises to create a welcoming and professional learning environment for learners and staff. They have moved all training to the first floor of the building and have redecorated throughout. Leaders have changed the layout of the reception, training, administration and social areas to make better use of the available space and they plan to extend a small classroom to increase the capacity. Learners have access to a classroom dedicated to the teaching of functional skills English and mathematics course, an up-to-date computer suite, a modernised beauty treatment room and a dedicated social space.

p.2

Reasonable progress

Learners and apprentices benefit from up-to-date industry standard equipment and resources that enable them to develop the practical skills they need in the beauty therapy sector. Leaders have updated the customer beds to wider hydraulic versions for easy access, the pedicure equipment, the radio frequency machinery for treating cellulite, and the specialised machines for providing skin treatments. They have updated teaching resources in all classrooms and practical teaching areas including computer facilities, and all tutors have dedicated laptops to link directly to digital screens to enhance their teaching. Monitoring visit: Yorkshire College of Beauty Limited, 1 and 2 November 2023

p.2

Significant progress

Leaders have strengthened quality assurance arrangements and extended the range of quality assurance activities that they undertake. They use the results of these to make improvements to the quality of education that learners receive. Managers carry out activities such as termly observations of teaching, frequent themed learning walks and audits of the quality of the resources that teachers use, and they review the results of awarding body audits. Managers use the results of these activities to inform discussions at meetings where tutors share best practice and support their peers to improve. Recent topics that have been discussed include different methods that can be used to check learning, how to recap topics effectively and how to use learning activities in practical sessions to maintain learners’ engagement between offering customer treatments.

p.3

Significant progress

Tutors benefit from helpful training to improve their pedagogical skills and to keep their industry skills up to date. Leaders have invested in online training to help improve teaching and learning support. The training that managers provide includes topics such as effective classroom management, how to support learners with dyslexia, understanding how learners commit new knowledge to their long-term memory and understanding how to meet the needs of learners with special educational needs and/or disabilities.

p.3

Significant progress

Tutors keep their industry knowledge and skills up to date by maintaining employment within the beauty sector. This helps them to keep abreast of new treatments and products. Tutors also receive frequent training from product suppliers that they apply in their teaching. Managers respond quickly when staff identify that they need more training in an aspect of beauty therapy. For example, when tutors identified they were not confident in makeup application skills, managers quickly arranged for an industry expert to provide a workshop.

p.3

Reasonable progress

Tutors use effective teaching methods on the sport and fitness programme. They monitor learners closely and correct any misconceptions quickly. Tutors use skilful questioning to challenge learners’ thinking and to encourage them to think more broadly and deeply. Monitoring visit: Yorkshire College of Beauty Limited, 1 and 2 November 2023 Tutors sequence learning logically. The first four weeks of the course include basic anatomy and physiology, health and safety, and how to design workouts for individuals. This enables learners to develop an understanding of how to keep clients safe and design training sessions. The latter part of the course builds on learners’ knowledge and includes topics on anatomy, how to design workouts for groups, how to advise on nutrition and how to become self-employed in the fitness industry. Tutors plan sessions effectively to build learners’ knowledge. When learning about

the muscles of the arms, learners initially develop an understanding of how the muscles work and then put together an exercise plan to focus on specific muscles. In subsequent practical lessons in a gym environment, learners work in pairs to carry out and critique each other’s routines.

p.4

Reasonable progress

Tutors are highly experienced in the fitness training industry field and hold relevant qualifications in teaching. They continue to run personal training businesses which keeps their industry knowledge fresh.

p.4

Significant progress

Tutors track the progress that apprentices make accurately. When assessing practical work, tutors record the dates when apprentices practise, attempt and complete different beauty techniques. Tutors record when apprentices submit their written work for marking and track when apprentices have made amendments and resubmitted their work. As a result, tutors can identify quickly where apprentices are falling behind in their apprenticeship.

p.4

Significant progress

Tutors take appropriate action when apprentices fall behind or have difficulty with an aspect of the programme. For example, when apprentices struggle with the application of polish as part of a unit focusing on nails, tutors provide specific feedback that enables apprentices to improve their skills. Following the feedback, tutors conduct additional assessments of apprentices’ skills in applying nail polish correctly. Tutors keep employers fully informed of apprentices’ progress, and employers are clear about the specific targets and actions that have been set by tutors to help apprentices to improve.

p.4

Significant progress

Tutors ensure that apprentices know the progress that they are making. They monitor the quality of apprentices’ practical work and record a ‘working at’ grade for each apprentice. This grade covers the whole of the course and can change as apprentices attempt the eight different skills in the standard. Tutors provide apprentices with clear feedback about the standard of their work. Apprentices are clear about how well they are doing on their programme and which skills they need to continue to improve.
