The provision is good
Children are happy, settled and feel safe. They enjoy a close bond with the childminder and enjoy warmth, affection and reassurance. This encourages children to be confident learners and try new things. The childminder guides children and praises them. They are supported to 'have a go' and know the childminder is nearby if needed. Children feel secure in having a consistent routine and clear expectations.
p.2
The provision is good
The home is clean and spacious, and children have access to a variety of toys that are suitable for their age and stage of development. The childminder creates stimulating activities that are based on children's interests and adapts them to suit their learning needs. Children choose to spend time on the terrace playing with farm animals. When they are ready, they come back inside without being interrupted in their play.
p.2
The provision is good
The children play contentedly and chatter to themselves while doing so. The childminder listens and responds to children. Occasionally, children struggle to share but are supported to find a solution. The childminder gently reminds children to use 'kind hands' and helps them to find alternative toys for their friends.

need to do better?
n Children are encouraged to be polite and respectful of each other and their surroundings. Expectations for behaviour are clear and the childminder reminds children what is happening and when. The childminder gives children autonomy and choice where possible, encouraging them to think for themselves. For example, she talks to children about what they would like for lunch and when they would like to eat it. Children use manners and are acknowledged in doing so with smiles and praise. n The childminder is mindful not to rush children and let them grow and develop at their own pace. She supports children to learn from one another and talks about what is happening, for example when potty training. Parents are consulted and supported with next steps for their children. Parents describe feeling 'lucky' to have found the childminder and speak highly of her. They enjoy hearing about what their child is doing and how they are progressing.

need to do better?
n The childminder knows the children in her care well. She plans for their interests but is happy to move along to do something different if that is what the child wants. Children play fleetingly with toy farm animals in a large plastic tray that is set up with different textures and then move along to play with toy cars. The childminder responds by acknowledging their choice and offering them a toy garage and a selection of small cars. She uses mathematical language to describe spaces in the car park and encourages children to decide if the car will

26 September 2023 fit. n Children listen well to familiar stories and are encouraged to join in. They recognise colours and pretend to cry when the colour monster is sad. The childminder plays along and pretends to cry too. She helps children with their emotional development by linking the word to the feeling. Children show concern at the monster's red cheeks, thinking he has a 'boo boo'. The childminder gently explains this is not the case and helps them to understand. The childminder repeats back unclear words said by children and add new words to increase their vocabulary. n The childminder consistently reflects on her practice and identifies the areas she would like to strengthen. For example, she feels able to identify when a child needs early help through getting to know children well and discussions with parents. She would benefit from enhancing her knowledge of children with special educational needs and/or disabilities even further.

need to do better?
n Children enjoy trips out most mornings, which helps to build their confidence and social skills. The childminder is involved in running a local playgroup with other childminders, giving opportunity for children to mix with their peers and enjoy a sense of community. Children benefit from trips to soft-play centres and the park to run around, build stamina, coordination and balance.
p.3
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
p.3
Safeguarding
The childminder shows good understanding of child protection. She demonstrates good knowledge of procedures regarding allegations, keeping records and who to contact should there be a concern. The childminder has an awareness of the emotional effects of abuse and what to look out for. She is aware of managing risks and constantly supervises children. The childminder continually monitors the environment and visually risk assesses at home and on trips out. She understands how to manage any allergies children may have, and she has a good system for recording medication, accidents and incidents.
