p.2
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The child has made good progress while living at the home because of the support they receive. This includes an increase in the child’s self-confidence and improved social skills. The child is happy and has good relationships with staff.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The child has a say in what happens in the home. Staff help the child to make decisions about activities, meals, home furnishings and plans for Christmas and birthdays. The improvement in the child’s confidence means that they more freely express their opinions to staff on a range of issues.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff ensure that the child maintains good health. Staff encourage the child to eat a varied diet and take regular exercise. There is plan of help for routine and specialist medical appointments. Plans for the child are written to them in clear language. This ensures that the child understands what they need to do to keep healthy.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff are helping the child to develop their independence skills. To achieve this, the child has a timetable of daily living tasks, such as household chores and attending to their personal care needs. The child has made good progress so far and further work is planned.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff have supported the child to rekindle relationships with their family. The child has a network of family members who they see on a regular basis. In addition, staff invite the child’s friends to come for tea or a sleepover. Staff recognise the significance of the child’s relationships for their identity and sense of belonging.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The child has made significant progress in attending education. One professional said that the registered manager is the child’s biggest education advocate and will go above and beyond for them. Staff understand the barriers which prevent the child going to school and have addressed these with education professionals. Staff have sourced a work placement and take the child to English and mathematics lessons. The child is enthusiastic and motivated with her choice of career.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The registered manager has developed a comprehensive risk assessment document. This means that staff know what to do to minimise the risk of harm to the child.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff do not use physical intervention to manage the child’s behaviour because they are effective at de-escalating situations. The child trusts staff and there is a mutual respect between them.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff know what to do if the child goes missing from care. Staff search the local area and contact people known to the child. The child is offered a missing-from-home interview with an independent person when they return to the home. However, the Inspection report for children’s home: SC413223 4 manager does not review the reasons why the child has been missing. This is a missed opportunity for staff to fully understand the child’s perspective.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff promote the child’s emotional well-being. They support the child to talk to a therapist. The child has learned to use a range of coping strategies to manage their worries. As a result, incidents of self-harm have reduced and are rare.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The home is led by a suitably qualified and experienced manager. She provides nurturing, child-centred care and is a good role model for her staff team.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff receive regular supervision to talk about the care they provide. The registered manager offers opportunities for staff to reflect on their practice and the impact on the child’s progress. Staff undertake all mandatory training as well as training that is specific to the child’s individual needs.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The registered manager has made significant progress in developing the service. She uses the reports of the visits carried out by the independent person to support and challenge staff. The registered manager has developed a monthly monitoring system which documents the quality of care for the child.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff communicate effectively with other agencies involved in the child’s care. This ensures that there is a strong multi-agency approach to care planning. The registered manager will challenge professionals when a plan is not in the best interests of the child. Inspection report for children’s home: SC413223 5
p.4

The registered person should ensure that they evaluate missing-from-care incidents to record and retain evidence of what worked well. (‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’, page 46, paragraph 9.31)
