p.1

The provision is inadequate

The childminder has made insufficient progress since the last inspection. She does not evaluate practice effectively to secure continuous improvement. Although the childminder has completed training and received help from the local authority, this is not having the required impact to improve children's learning and development experiences. Children do not benefit from a broad and ambitious curriculum, that is delivered well enough to extend their learning. The childminder does not do enough to close gaps, particularly in children's language and communication.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

Children enjoy attending, interact well with the childminder and enjoy the company of the other children. They have good manners and generally play well together. However, the weaknesses in the curriculum and the childminder's teaching means, children are not supported to become active learners or think creatively. In addition, the childminder does not fully support children's learning by providing enough time during activities for them to think, process and respond to questions she asks. This is a recurring theme from previous inspections.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder has not taken sufficient action to tackle areas of weakness identified at previous inspections. She is unable to identify areas of weakness unless they are pointed out to her. This has led to training that has not tackled what needs to improve well enough. n The childminder does not plan a curriculum which sufficiently challenges children. It does not focus sharply enough or plan effectively for what children need to learn next. It does not help children to gain the necessary skills they need for starting school. For example, the childminder delays supporting children with potty training even though they are ready, which hinders their progress. Children do not make the progress of which they are capable. n Children do not receive good quality learning and development experiences. Although the childminder plans activities she knows the children will enjoy and talks to them about relevant themes, she does not link the activities and her

teaching to children's learning needs well enough. For example, she asks the children simple questions during a dinosaur activity, but does not give the children the time that they need to think creatively and critically before she moves on to another topic. The childminder does not extend children's learning as well as she could or introduce new words to build on their vocabulary. n At times, the childminder engages children well in activities that they enjoy. For example, children concentrate to draw pictures and tell the childminder what they have drawn. n Children behave well. The childminder gives them praise and encouragement. She praises the children for sharing and being kind to one another. As a result,

need to do better?

12 September 2023 children develop positive relationships with others. n Children follow handwashing routines and the childminder provides a healthy snack, which they serve themselves. However, the childminder does not encourage all children to use the toilet, despite her recognising that this is a next step for some children. Although children wash their hands, the childminder tells them not to use their hands when serving themselves snack because they have germs. This gives conflicting messages as the children have already washed the germs off. n Partnerships with parents are secure. The childminder gathers detailed information from parents when the children first start in her care. This includes their interests and preferences. The childminder gets to know the children, however, she does not use this knowledge well enough to plan for their next steps in learning.

p.2

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has updated her safeguarding training and can identify the signs or symptoms, which may be a cause for concern. The childminder has a good understanding of her role and responsibility to keep children safe. She has a clear understanding of the procedures of her local safeguarding partnership and can recognise when she needs to make a referral. The childminder risk assesses her home and garden. She identifies any potential hazards and takes action to minimise risks. This helps the childminder to provide a safe and suitable environment.
