p.2
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
At the time of the inspection, three children were living at the home. Since the last inspection, two children have moved into the home. Children told the inspector that they like living at the home and that they are happy and feel safe.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children moving into the home have benefited from transitions that are well planned. For example, prior to the children moving in, the manager visited them to understand their likes and dislikes. In addition, the manager makes sure that she has all the required information to ensure that staff are informed about children’s care needs. This supports children to settle into the home and helps to build relationships.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The manager and staff understand the importance of education. All three children are attending education provisions suited to their needs and have full-time attendance. The manager advocates for children to receive the required assessments or additional tuition. This support helps the children to reach their potential.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff ensure that children have fun and make happy memories. Children have their own hobbies and interests. One child has recently started a part-time job and is enjoying developing her independence and learning new skills. Another child attends a regular church group and spends time in the community with her friends. In addition, the children like spending time together watching films at the home.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The home is welcoming and well presented. Children were proud to show the inspector their bedrooms, which have been personalised to ensure that they are spaces for relaxation and rest. The manager has updated the communal spaces to reflect the interests of the new children who have moved into the home. This is a home that children feel comfortable in.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff understand the children’s known risks and what actions they are expected to take to keep children safe. When appropriate, the manager consults external professionals about children’s assessments to ensure that staff are offering the best response. The manager has plans to further improve the children’s written plans to help her identify trends in the children’s behaviours.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff physically intervene when necessary to keep children safe. The manager ensures that children and staff have opportunities to discuss and reflect on incidents. As a result, children understand why interventions are used by staff, and together with staff they consider ways to reduce these incidents from occurring. Inspection report for children’s home: SC457074 4 Staff take prompt and appropriate action when children go missing from home. Staff follow the missing-from-home procedures to ensure that children are quickly located. On return to the home, children are warmly welcomed back and given opportunities to reflect. However, on some occasions, staff have failed to show sufficient professional curiosity. Staff are not always curious about how the child spent their time, or who they were with. This is a missed opportunity to understand the risks children are exposed to.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff respond with sensitivity and compassion when children harm themselves. This means that children seek support from staff and know that they will get help if they need it.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Medication is stored and administered safely. Staff consult with health professionals when additional support is needed and ensure that children receive medical treatment when it is required. This ensures the health needs of children are met.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff provide children with regular opportunities to learn about risks and to influence the care that they receive. This means that children have a better understanding of the decisions that adults make and of how to keep themselves safer now and in the future.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff recruitment procedures are thorough. This helps to ensure that staff working at the home are suitable to work with children.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager has been in position since May 2020. She is suitably qualified and experienced. A deputy manager supports her. Together, they are passionate about children having positive experiences.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff morale is high and staff say that they enjoy working at the home. Staff receive good-quality, regular supervision sessions. These sessions are used to reflect on practice. If the manager identifies areas for practice development, she ensures that staff receive additional training or the guidance required. This support improves the care provided for children and enables staff to feel more confident.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
All staff have completed mandatory training. The manager has ensured that staff have completed all the necessary training specific to the needs of the children. In addition, the manager has created a ‘therapeutic action plan’ that provides staff with a range of resources to encourage additional learning.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager and staff have developed strong partnerships with external professionals. The manager will challenge those who are not meeting children’s needs, or if she feels that improvements can be made. External agencies were overwhelmingly positive, during the inspection, in their feedback about communication and the quality of care. Inspection report for children’s home: SC457074 5 Since the last inspection, the manager’s monitoring systems have improved. The manager created a thorough action plan to ensure that all requirements made at the last inspection were met. In addition, she completes a range of weekly and monthly service audits. The manager’s audits are complimented by audits completed by the responsible individual. As a result, managers and leaders have good oversight of the home and the areas for development.
