Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children live in a caring, friendly and supportive home. Staff give children the help that they need to grow by being patient and understanding. A child said that her views, wishes and feelings are taken seriously. For example, she said that the manager has ensured that she has received additional support to help her with her emotional health. She continued to say that she has opportunities to talk to staff and is encouraged to comment on all aspects of her care. A social worker said: ‘The staff are extremely proactive, and [name of child] is making fantastic progress. I could not wish for any more.’
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff work well as part of the wider support network to plan for the children’s care. Their strong working relationships with parents, social workers, teachers and health workers make sure that children get the best possible support that continues to meet their needs.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children are supported well with their individual health needs and have good access to local services when they need them. When children need additional help with their emotional health or with risk-taking behaviour, specialist help is sourced quickly.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff have built good relationships with parents. This means that children have been able to repair their relationships with the people that are important to them. A parent said: ‘Staff have been brilliant. I now see my child regularly and she is now staying overnight.’
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff help children to build on their skills or learn new skills in preparation for adult life. They ensure that children have a leaving care social worker, a pathway plan and a transition plan. As a result, a child is looking forward to the next stage in her life.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Children live in a homely environment that is maintained well. Children are encouraged to personalise their own bedrooms and they proudly display photos of their family and of their achievements. This gives the children a sense of belonging.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Safeguarding practice at the home is good and it keeps the children safe from harm. Children understand that safeguards are needed to keep them safe, such as two-to- one staffing. A child said that she feels very safe and that staff do their very best to safeguard her.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Some children who have lived at this home have been vulnerable to exploitation. The manager has initiated strategy meetings when a child’s behaviour has become a concern. The manager made sure that all professionals involved in the child’s care were invited to the meeting. Together, they shared information and made Inspection report for children’s home: SC457181 4 appropriate and effective plans. This means that children got the right support to help them to be safe.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
There have been no safeguarding concerns to report to safeguarding agencies. Physical intervention has not been required. All staff have received safeguarding training and additional supportive training, such as in preventing child sexual exploitation, county lines and substance misuse. Staff demonstrate that they understand their role in protecting children from harm. Staff contribute to safety assessments and help to formulate plans to reduce risk.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
When children have left the home without permission, staff have followed the child’s missing-from-home protocol and searched the local areas for them. Return home interviews have been completed with the child by an independent person. This means that the child has had the opportunity to share the reasons why they went missing and if they have any concern about their care.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff understand what they need to do to de-escalate negative behaviours. This promotes a positive and non-confrontational culture. Positive behaviour is continually promoted and rewarded at the home.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Safe recruitment and health and safety practices at the home ensure that only the most suitable staff work at the home. Records show that children, staff and visitors are taken through the emergency evacuation procedure.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The registered manager and the deputy manager are experienced and have a management qualification in residential childcare. They provide clear, consistent and effective leadership. Staff are strong advocates for children. They challenge professionals effectively to ensure that each child receives the right care and support.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The staff team receives regular supervision that is reflective and is underpinned by development and individual strengths. Appraisals focus on the development of individual staff members, as well as the home overall. Regular team meetings give staff the opportunity to reflect on children’s progress, on how to improve the support they give to children, on how to develop their skills and knowledge, and on the emotional impact of the work.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff have a range of life experiences and qualifications. They are skilled in working with children, and they are dedicated and compassionate. New staff complete a full induction and a six-month probationary period.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff receive training to support their learning, and the manager has a clear system in place to make sure that staff have received mandatory training. Staff have a detailed induction which identifies their training needs and is reviewed regularly. The staff team also benefits from sessions of informal learning and reflection with a mental health professional, which are held on a weekly basis. Inspection report for children’s home: SC457181 5 Monitoring systems ensure that plans for children are in place and reviewed when required. However, the independent person has regularly failed to gather important feedback from the child and the people who are important to the child. This limits the effectiveness of their assessment.
