The provision requires improvement
The childminder has not kept his knowledge up to date and, as a result, his practice is not yet good. The curriculum on offer is variable in quality and at times lacks focus on what children can already do and what they need to learn next. Therefore, children do not fully benefit from good quality learning experiences. Although the childminder has expectations of what he wants children to learn, he does not consistently include them in the curriculum. Nevertheless, the childminder and his assistant and co-childminder know how to engage children in play and have fun with them.
p.2
The provision requires improvement
Children enjoy their time with the childminder. They have a warm relationship with him, his assistant and the co-childminder. Parents comment that their children are always happy to come to the childminder and talk about him at home.
p.2
The provision requires improvement
Children are encouraged to be independent and confident. Children show good concentration for their age as they paint or play in the home corner. The childminder makes good use of opportunities to encourage children to be polite and well mannered. Children are encouraged to share and take turns during group activities.

need to do better?
n The childminder and his assistant use everyday and basic language with children. Children do not hear words that help them to build a rich vocabulary and extend their learning. For example, while reading a book, the childminder does not offer new and exciting words to inspire children's curiosity. Children are often asked, 'What's that?' and they are not encouraged to ask questions. This limits the opportunities for children to extend their learning. n The childminder encourages children to be as independent as they can be. Children wash and dry their own hands, self-select resources and happily feed themselves. This helps children to develop their self-esteem and to feel secure in the environment. n Children enjoy looking at books and singing familiar songs and rhymes with the childminder. They use sticky boards to choose the song or rhyme that they want to hear next and patiently wait their turn. The childminder is supportive and

celebrates children's patience. n Children show how they use their imagination. They enjoy playing in the home corner and shopping with the trolley. Children use their real-life experiences in role play to feed the dolls and put them to bed. Children have access to other role-play resources, such as dressing up items, that they can self-select. n The childminder collects some information about children during the settling-in process. However, the information collected is limited and does not give enough

7 September 2023 information about the child for the childminder to accurately organise care routines and plan a well-balanced curriculum. This could lead to children feeling unsettled and their basic needs not being met. n The childminder introduces children to basic mathematical concepts such as 'big and small', and 'long and short'. Children link these words to gestures to show their understanding and can be heard saying 'bigger dinosaur' during play. n Children have access to a garden area where they can run, kick a ball and play on the slide. This offers children opportunities to practise their gross motor skills and develop their coordination skills. n Children show good concentration skills. However, they are often moved on to other activities without any warning while they are engrossed in play and become distressed. n Children are well behaved and play cooperatively together. Minor disagreements

are handled calmly by the childminder and short explanations are given to children in order to resolve issues. n The childminder keeps his mandatory training up to date. However, he does not focus on improving his understanding of the learning and development requirements, and there are gaps in his knowledge of how to meet children's learning needs. The childminder does not fully understand how to plan an inspiring curriculum that is based on the seven areas of learning.
p.3
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
p.3
Safeguarding
The childminder and his assistant have an acceptable understanding of child protection issues and are able to show that they recognise the signs of abuse and neglect. They are clear who to report concerns to and of their responsibility to do so. Relevant contact details are readily available in the childminder's safeguarding policy. The childminder and his assistant can identify issues that would give them cause for concern about a child's welfare. They carry out regular risk assessments to help to ensure that the home remains a safe place in which children can play both inside and outside in the garden.
