The quality of education Good Behaviour and attitudes Good Personal development Inadequate Leadership and management Inadequate Overall effectiveness at previous inspection Good

p.1

The provision is inadequate

Children's overall safety is compromised. This is because the childminder does not follow a robust recruitment procedure when employing new assistants. She fails to inform Ofsted swiftly and complete the required forms to enable checks to be completed. In addition, she has not taken up any references on new assistants to support this process.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

However, children are happy in the childminder's welcoming home. They confidently say 'Goodbye' to their parent or carer and engage with the childminder and her two assistants. The childminder plans a broad curriculum and is aware of what she wants children to learn. She places a strong focus on helping children to be ready for transition to school. This supports children to gain skills such as listening and concentration. Children are motivated and have positive attitudes to learning. They enjoy accessing a range of appropriate toys and resources. They play well together when using the play kitchen and pretend to be make dinner together. Children also enjoy participating in planned group activities. For example, they listen attentively during story time, and join in using props with the book.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

The childminder introduces children to planting activities. The childminder labels the pots half full and full, so children begin to recognise key words. They learn about filling their pots with soil and planting the seeds. Alongside this practical learning the childminder makes good use of simple diagrams, which show the children the steps to follow for planting. This helps children to understand about following instructions.

need to do better?

n The childminder is in breach of safeguarding and welfare requirements. She does not ensure that suitability checks on new assistants are actioned immediately and includes the new assistant in the adult/child ratio before their suitability has been confirmed. In addition, she has been working with a co- childminder occasionally since last year, but has not informed Ofsted of this person. n This co-childminder provides emergency cover but also takes children to nursery at lunchtime. On some school drop offs the co-childminder uses her car, however the childminder has not checked the co-childminder has appropriate car insurance, and has no records to demonstrate they hold a paediatric first-aid certificate. This puts children's welfare at risk in the event of an accident occurring. n The childminder does not maintain an accurate record of children's attendance. This does not ensure children's overall safety, as she would be unable to clearly

identify the times of arrival in an emergency.

need to do better?

16 March 2023 n The childminder understands child development and observes and tracks children's progress effectively. Overall, she uses this information to plan a clear and ambitious curriculum to help children make good progress. She has effective systems in place for identifying any gaps in children's learning, and is aware of outside agencies she may need to contact if children require additional support. n Children enjoy creative art activities; they enjoy making cards for Mother's Day. Older children are provided with an example card to follow and make flowers for their cards, younger children use paint to make a flower. However, these activities and displays around the room are mostly adult-directed with less scope for children to be creative and use their own imagination to design pictures. n The childminder has a good clear awareness of how children learn and supports them to practise skills and have a go. She repeats learning and encourages

children to think and experiment with their ideas. n For some of the day the childminder splits the age groups of children and she and her assistants provide age-appropriate learning experiences for the differing ages. Children enjoy group times together; they enjoy singing songs on their own to the group. However, during the inspection the focus of children taking turns to sing changed halfway through, and some less confident children did not get the opportunity to sing. n Children learn to keep themselves healthy and follow good hygiene routines. They are independent with their toileting needs and know to wash their hands at appropriate times during the day. Children have a packed lunch provided from their parents/carers. The childminder provides information on the types of food to provide, to ensure that food is nutritious.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

Breaches in the safeguarding and welfare requirements have a significant impact on children's overall safety. Poor recruitment processes do not ensure that all adults working with the children are suitably checked. The childminder and longstanding assistant have a good understanding of the signs and symptoms that may indicate a child is at risk. They are aware of the reporting procedures to follow if they were concerned about a child. However, the childminder has not ensured she has completed a thorough induction process for the newer assistant, and they lack awareness of the correct reporting procedures to follow, particularly if they had concerns about adults they are working with. The childminder's home is safe and secure. However, the childminder places children safety at risk when using her co-childminder to take children to school, sometimes using her car, without checking the co-childminder has appropriate car insurance and a paediatric first-aid
