Overall effectiveness Inadequate

The quality of education Good Behaviour and attitudes Good Personal development Inadequate Leadership and management Inadequate Overall effectiveness at previous inspection Not applicable

p.1

The provision is inadequate

Children are not kept as safe as they should be due to weaknesses in the setting's safeguarding procedures. However, they enjoy a varied curriculum that supports their learning well. Children enthusiastically join in with activities. They particularly like singing action songs and rhymes that enable them to jump around. Children learn simple addition. They take turns to be bouncing elephants and count how many elephants there are altogether after each one invites another elephant to play.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

Children are learning to recognise the sounds of the letters that start their names. Older, most-able children confidently recognise their names and those of their friends. All children register their attendance at nursery and show pride when they place their name on the board to say they are present. Children's love of books is supported well. Staff are animated as they read to children, capturing and maintaining their attention.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

Children show great excitement and enjoy extra-curricular activities, such as French, yoga and ball skills. They eagerly wait for the French teacher to arrive with her bear Bon Bon and take turns to give him a cuddle. Children say 'bonjour' as they greet each other and enjoy singing various songs in French and learn about celebrations that take place throughout the year.

need to do better?

n Weaknesses in leadership and management impact on the ongoing safety of the children. Concerns relating to safeguarding are not dealt with appropriately and procedures for raising concerns with other agencies are not followed. This places children at risk. n Staff use detailed information gained from parents, alongside their own observations and assessments of children, to plan an interesting curriculum. They adapt activities to meet the differing needs of the children, finely tuning individual learning opportunities. Staff liaise with parents about their child's progress and development and share ideas for continuing their child's learning at home. However, partnerships with other settings children attend are not yet established. This impacts on the continuity of children's care and learning experiences. n Relationships between staff and children are good. Children enter the nursery happily and greet staff and their friends enthusiastically. They settle quickly into

the nursery day and show that they are confident, independent learners. n Children behave well. Older children show consideration towards the younger children, and they all learn the importance of being kind to each other. Staff encourage children to share the toys and take turns when playing. Children's

need to do better?

13 July 2023 confidence and self-esteem grow through the ongoing praise and encouragement from staff. n Parents are delighted with the care and learning opportunities their children receive in nursery. They appreciate the regular updates they receive about their child's learning and activities they can continue at home. n Children enjoy being active. They have lots of opportunities to develop their physical skills inside and outdoors. Children show high levels of concentration and hand and eye coordination as they try to hit tennis balls with rackets outside. They learn to use scissors with confidence and pens and pencils to make marks. n Children benefit from eating plenty of healthy snacks and parents provide packed lunches. Staff share information with parents about suitable items to include and children learn to eat the healthier options first, leaving the treats until the end. Effective routines ensure that children's dietary needs are known

by staff. Children remain hydrated throughout the day. Fresh drinking water is freely available. n Independence is encouraged from an early age. Children learn to wash their hands at appropriate times throughout the day. They confidently use the bathroom and staff ensure that nappy routines maintain children's comfort throughout the day. Children rest and sleep according to their needs. A comfy book area provides a quieter space for children to relax and recharge their energy levels when they need to. n Children develop a good understanding of similarities and differences and the wider world. They see positive images of people from different cultural backgrounds and people with different abilities through resources and books. Children really enjoy looking at photographs of themselves, their families and friends and recall past events. For example, visiting a local farm and enjoy sharing their experiences.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

Children's safety is not assured. The designated safeguarding lead (DSL) has not taken appropriate steps to safeguard children. They have not identified safeguarding concerns that place children at risk of harm. They have failed to follow the procedures for raising a concern about a child in their care with the appropriate safeguarding agency. That said, other staff demonstrate a secure knowledge of the various signs that may indicate a child is at risk of abuse and neglect. Despite the weakness in the DSL's knowledge, other staff have followed local referral procedures to protect children. Effective routines for ensuring the nursery is a safe and secure environment are in place. Children learn about their own safety when walking to and from the outside play area and in the event of an emergency evacuation.
