This provision does not meet requirements

There are significant weaknesses in the childminder's setting, which have an impact on the safety of children. In particular this relates to safeguarding policies and procedures, recorded information about children, contents of the first-aid box and up-to-date knowledge of the Statutory framework for the early years years foundation stage to promote children's safety and well-being. The childminder has not fully implemented the actions from the last Ofsted visit, indicating a limited capacity to improve.

This provision does not meet requirements

Despite this, children enjoy the time that they spend with the childminder. They arrive happy and enjoy their interactions as they play. For example, children enjoy identifying letters on wooden blocks and thinking of words that start with these letters. Children behave well. They respond positively to the childminder when he gives them guidance. For example, the childminder and children work together to tidy away resources, before they get new activities out.

p.2

This provision does not meet requirements

The childminder has good relationships with children. They often laugh together, and children show that they feel comfortable. The childminder is aware of children's interests and provides resources that he thinks they will enjoy. For example, he knows that children enjoy building with blocks. He uses these to help develop their counting skills. Children independently make choices from the wide selection of resources and activities, that are age-appropriate and easily accessible.

n The childminder has an awareness of some safeguarding procedures. He has previously attended training. However, some aspects of his understanding need updating. For example, he does not have a robust knowledge of the 'Prevent' duty and other dangers relating to safeguarding children. The procedures that he has in place to follow if he believes a child is at risk of abuse, are not up to date. n Children's welfare is not protected. The childminder does not keep necessary records for childminding, such as children's addresses. This prevents him from sharing information with those who have a right to see them, such as other professionals. n The childminder has recently completed first-aid training. This helps him to understand how to keep children safe in the event of an accident or incident. However, he does not have appropriate first-aid resources available for use in the event of an accident. This means he would not be able to treat children

8 June 2023 professionals and settings where children also attend. He gathers and shares useful information with them about individual children in order to support their ongoing interests and enjoyment. The childminder plans some activities for children to complement their learning in school. For example, he plays games with children and encourages them to read and learn about different animals and reptiles. n The childminder provides children with home-cooked, healthy meals and water. He encourages children to practise good hygiene routines. For instance, the childminder ensures that children wash their hands before they eat snacks and meals. The childminder supports children's physical skills well. For instance, children visit a play area after school, where they run around, climb and benefit from fresh air. n Parents comment that their children enjoy spending time with the childminder. They are happy with the level of care that the childminder provides and feel that

the communication is good. n The childminder has not developed an effective programme of professional development. This is to ensure that he is fully up to date with current practice. His lack of understanding of the Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage means he is unable to fully evaluate his provision and plan appropriate, targeted improvements.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has a weak knowledge of safeguarding and child protection. He does not understand his responsibilities to keep his knowledge of different types of abuse, such as the 'Prevent' duty and other safeguarding dangers to children, up to date. The childminder is not alert to all possible signs and symptoms that suggest a child is suffering from all types of abuse. His policies and procedures are not accurate, and do not ensure the safety of children in his care. Failure to maintain relevant information and records compromises children's safety further. Furthermore, the childminder's first-aid box has contents that are not appropriate for use on children, and this poses further risks to children's safety.
