p.2
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
There were two children living in the home at the time of the inspection. Children have positive relationships with staff. One child took great pride in singing with staff for the inspectors. Both children told the inspectors that they like living in the home and that they feel safe.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff help children to make progress with their education. Both children are engaged in education full time and participate in activities after school, including additional tuition. Children spoke positively to the inspectors about the progress they are making with their learning.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff encourage children to pursue their interests and enhance their social experiences. Children engage in a range of activities, and recently one child has begun voluntary work at the local horse-riding stables. In addition, children enjoyed participating in a party for the King’s Coronation and celebrating their birthdays.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Both children’s health needs are well met. Children are registered at local services and supported to attend routine medical appointments.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The environment is homely, with nice decoration and photos of children having fun. Children’s bedrooms are personalised in line with their wishes and interests. One child is planning on redecorating her room and painting artwork on her wall with the help of staff. Another child loves spending time in the home’s playroom, doing arts and crafts and playing with toys.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Children are safe. Staff know how to respond to incidents and any risks to children. However, records are not always clear. Children’s plans do not reflect the current risk management strategies that are used to protect children. For example, one child’s risk assessment does not include the risk of independence time in the community, despite managers and staff having to implement protective factors due to a safeguarding concern. During the inspection, the manager acknowledged this shortfall and made a plan to make the necessary updates.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Since the last inspection, there have been no physical interventions. The manager and staff have received retraining in restraint. They have also spent time with the company’s behaviour management lead to identify patterns in incidents and to improve their approach to behaviour management.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
There has been a reduction in allegations made by children. When these take place, the manager ensures that information is shared swiftly with the appropriate Inspection report for children's home: SC478134 4 professionals. Furthermore, when appropriate, the manager ensures that children are informed of any outcomes. This helps children feel listened to and safe.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Staff work hard to build positive relationships with children. Staff use one-to-one sessions with children to explore known and emerging concerns. These sessions are reflective and help children to learn about strategies to keep themselves safe and to understand the measures staff take to keep them safe.
p.4
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Recruitment processes are thorough, and staff who are recruited to work in the home are subject to all necessary checks.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager has improved her oversight of the care provided in the home. Following the last inspection, the manager implemented an action plan to address the shortfalls and to help her identify further areas for learning and development. In addition, the manager has sourced additional training to enable her to develop her leadership and management skills.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff say that they enjoy working at the home and feel supported. The manager reflects on practice with staff to support their learning. Staff receive regular supervision, and since the last inspection, they have all received an appraisal.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Staff have access to a wide range of training opportunities. The manager extends learning by using team meetings to discuss learning from training and discuss topics that are relevant to current matters arising in the home. This practice gives staff a greater opportunity to learn from each other and promotes an open culture in the home.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The manager and staff work well with professionals and people who are important to children. The manager effectively challenges services to ensure that children are getting the right support at the right time.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Following the last inspection, a new independent person has been completing monthly audits of the home. These reports are more detailed, and the manager finds them useful in helping to maintain oversight of the service. Inspection report for children's home: SC478134 5
