p.1

The provision is good

Children are motivated to explore and develop their skills. The childminder carefully considers children's interests and learning needs and builds these into her curriculum. Children develop their confidence with different materials as they investigate the interesting sensory activities the childminder provides. Children are fascinated by coloured foam and test out their ideas, mixing this with water and marvelling at the changes they produce. They paint, making items linked to a story. They bury toy animals in the sand following imaginative games. Babies and children develop their physical strength and coordination very well. The childminder has a wealth of resources in her garden that motivate children to try out their skills and take on challenges. Babies negotiate the little slide and ride-on cars. They show a 'can-do' attitude, and their confidence grows as they master new skills. They toddle round to have another go on the slide, beaming proudly as the

childminder praises them. Older children enjoy being active. They climb, swing and show good balance.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder is caring and affectionate with the children. She supports babies and children's care needs closely. She quickly adapts her plans to ensure that they are comfortable and happy, and their well-being remains high. They develop close bonds with her. They thrive in the relaxed, safe and nurturing environment.

need to do better?

n The childminder links closely with local childminders and regional childminding advisors to gain good practice ideas. She thinks about what she provides for children and any areas for improvement. She adapted the use of her home during the COVID-19 pandemic. She has kept many of the changes finding they worked so well. The convenience of having her playroom at the rear of her house, including her useful garden room gives children lots of beneficial access to her good-sized garden and stimulating areas and activities. n The childminder is experienced and knows how children learn. She ensures children make good progress and that older children are well prepared for their move on to school. She is skilful in her teaching, extending their skills effectively. Older children concentrate well on activities. They are keen to do things for themselves. They peel and cut up their fruit for their snack. They use the toilet

and wash their hands independently. n The childminder builds children's communication skills effectively. She talks clearly to the children making her meaning clear and modelling speech. Babies show their understanding as they follow the childminder's instructions. They use body language and make sounds to start to communicate what they want. Older children count with increasing confidence and develop their conversation skills well, happily chatting with the childminder on a wide range of topics.

need to do better?

3 May 2023 n The childminder outlines what each child needs to learn next and focuses her planned activities and support on closing gaps in their development. However, during some adult-led activities, the childminder has not fully thought through the support for the differing ages of the children. Some are pitched too high for the older babies and at times they lose interest. This means that they are not consistently engaged in the activity and their learning does not develop as much as it could. n The childminder takes children out daily. She builds their understanding of the world, their confidence in new situations and respect for others. Children visit playgroups to mix with other children and develop their social skills. They visit the neighbourhood library and local parks. They enjoy weekly bus trips to interesting cultural and heritage venues in the city. n The childminder patiently teaches children about behaviour expectations and

helps them begin to appreciate the needs of others, persevering with her explanations. She helps children manage their emotions and share resources. Babies and children really enjoy the company of the other children. Older babies toddle about keen to see the interesting things their little friends are exploring. Children join for imaginative games and to share play equipment, such as the swing. n The childminder builds strong relationships with parents and links closely with other settings children attend. She ensures they work together to provide children with a beneficial, consistent approach to the support that they receive. Parents are very grateful for the childminder's advice, particularly first-time parents who say that they can really count on her support, and that 'it is so helpful'.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder keeps her home clean and well maintained. She ensures that the play equipment is in good condition and appropriate for the ages of the children. She checks her home and garden to make sure they are safe for children. She has good security procedures. She supervises children closely and gives them reminders on safe practices as they play. She has clear procedures to promote children's safety when out of her home, such as on trips out into the local community and bus journeys into the city. The childminder keeps up to date with the local safeguarding procedures. She knows what action to take if she has concerns about a child in her care.
