p.2
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Since the last inspection, one child has remained living in the home and two children have moved on. The registered manager thoroughly considers the care planning for children moving into the home. This includes exploring all known risks and elements of care in the child’s referral information and how they will be able to care for the child. Senior leaders carried out a review to identify any lessons learned when one child’s placement ended abruptly due to new risks emerging.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The registered manager has worked alongside the virtual school to provide education for children who have not previously engaged for some time. They have also been proactive in supporting children to expand their horizons and explore different college courses. The child who currently lives in the home attends school full time and is engaging well and making progress in their attainment.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The registered manager has taken steps to support one child with a sensitive health issue, which has resulted in this child making progress in their independence. Children also attend regular health appointments and are encouraged to have a healthy lifestyle.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Following any incidents, restorative work is carried out with children and adults. This is embedded into the ethos of adults’ care practice. This includes hearing the voice of the children and building on their relationships with the adults.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The adults support children with regular coaching sessions. Topics are related to children’s care planning. For example, children who may misuse substances are supported by adults to access appropriate support to reduce their substance misuse and have regular reflective discussions around this.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The adults have attended additional training to enhance their knowledge of safeguarding practice. This has built their confidence and they are able to demonstrate that they understand the risks for children. Additionally, senior leaders have arranged advanced safeguarding training to continue adults’ professional development.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The registered manager takes appropriate action if children make allegations against an adult. Any such incidents are notified to all relevant parties and a thorough investigation is carried out, which includes reflection and lessons learned.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
There are plans in place to guide adults on how to support children to manage and reduce risks. Adults demonstrate that they understand these plans and how to keep children safe. Inspection report for children’s home: 2682262 4 An investigation has been carried out with the support from an external consultant following an incident where a child’s emotional well-being was at risk. The investigation was thorough and action was taken to keep the child safe.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
There are some shortfalls in the safer recruitment of staff. While senior leaders have ensured that internal members of staff have been recruited safely, the same vetting processes have not always been applied when appointing agency staff to work in the home. Consequently, the registered manager is unable to demonstrate that the agency staff have been safely recruited.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
The registered manager has a clear passion and drive to ensure the best possible outcomes for children and to ensure that they are loved, protected and supported. The registered manager and responsible individual have worked well together to implement changes to support the ethos of the home and improve outcomes for children.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
There is a focus on staff development, which is supported and embedded by supervision sessions that are reflective and therapeutic in their approach. Senior leaders have acknowledged the need for specific training, which has started to be implemented across the whole staff team. There are additional resources that are available for staff to access. Staff are encouraged to undertake self-directed learning and share this with each other. This ensures that staff work confidently with the children.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
Senior leaders have taken action to establish effective monitoring systems. This has led to greater oversight from managers. The responsible individual is committed to supporting the day-to-day running of the home alongside the registered manager and provides an additional level of oversight to ensure that children receive good care.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good
External feedback from professionals is positive. One child’s social worker commented, ‘I could not have asked for a better placement for [name of child].’ Additionally, the provider has sourced support from an external consultant to provide bespoke training for senior leaders and staff, who praise how ‘child focused’ the whole staff team is.
