p.1

The provision is good

Children are highly valued as individuals in the childminder's home-from-home environment. The childminder knows the children very well, and they share a secure attachment with her. Consequently, children feel safe, are extremely happy and develop self-confidence.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder provides a stimulating environment where children can choose from a variety of activities. For example, when toddlers watch builders construct a wall outside, they happily engage in role play as they put on builder's helmets and pretend to shovel earth into a wheelbarrow and push it up and down. Children also love playing as hairdressers and use brushes, combs and a hairdryer on each other and the adults. These activities help children to extend their imaginations. Babies enjoy investigating a basket full of interesting items which they can feel and explore. They enjoy a new cosy corner for quiet times and playing peekaboo.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder has high expectations of behaviour and supports children to learn how to share and take turns. She speaks to the children with the utmost respect and is an excellent role model. As a result, children behave well.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder has an ambitious curriculum, with a particularly strong focus on communication, language and emotional development.

need to do better?

n The childminder links an ongoing interest in birds so that children build on what they know and remember. For example, the children snuggle up to her as she reads a favourite story about birds and extends their knowledge as she names 'seagulls', 'blackbirds' and 'geese'. She provides a good range of books and reads to the children frequently. n The childminder supports children's developing language skills exceptionally well. She speaks clearly using age-appropriate language. She introduces new words and uses facial expressions and gestures to help children understand. She gently encourages children, especially children who are just learning to speak, to use words to express their needs and feelings. n The childminder uses every opportunity to bring in concepts of size, shape, colour and number. For example, she counts some model horses and encourages children to join in. Toddlers put their fingers on the horses and

count to three accurately. The childminder is skilful in providing children with thinking time to respond to new words and concepts. n The outside area of the childminder's home is temporarily unavailable. However, children benefit from walks every day to a variety of local places, such as parks. Here, the children take full advantage of the green open spaces and

19 April 2023 opportunities to look at nature. They go to local playgroups each week for additional indoor and outdoor play activities, as well as enjoying social interaction with other children. These outings enable children to feel part of the local community and understand more about the wider world. These rich experiences enhance the curriculum content further. n The childminder's home is very clean and hygienic. She helps children learn how to wash their hands thoroughly before eating their snack and lunch. n During the session, the children are eager to help the childminder tidy up. Sometimes, however, she does not check that the floor areas are sufficiently tidy to provide suitable spaces for children to play and explore. n Parents are extremely pleased with the progress their children make. They highly praise the childminder's warm, approachable nature. They express complete trust that she keeps their children safe and well. They all mention what

an important role she plays in their children's lives and development. n The childminder reflects on her practice and regularly talks to other childcare professionals about the curriculum and different ideas for improving practice or introducing new activities. She undertakes training that informs her ideas further. For example, she is more aware of her own role in helping to shape positive behaviour patterns, following specific training.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder is knowledgeable about signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect and is aware of other safeguarding issues, such as grooming and radicalisation. She has very clear policies and procedures, for example for how to evacuate children from the premises safely. She knows who to contact in the event of any concerns or if an allegation is made against her. She carries out thorough risk assessments of the hazards and risks posed by the building works and minimises or eliminates these through strict risk control measures. The childminder keeps children safe when on outings.
