Information about this inspection

 the care of children  the safety of children  the effectiveness of leaders and managers. Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with the Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: 2672244 2

p.1

Findings from the inspection

We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.

p.2

The care of children

At the time of the inspection, one child was living in the home. The child informed the inspector that they have developed positive relationships with staff since the last inspection. The child said, ‘Things are much better. I get on with all the staff and I know I can speak to them if I need to.’

p.2

The care of children

The child is supported by staff to access education and have aspirations for their future. The child has been supported to access education after a significant period and is now on roll at a mainstream school.

p.2

The care of children

The child’s views are considered as part of the care planning process. Staff regularly meet with the child to explore their wishes and feelings. The child is supported to have access to an advocate so that their views can be obtained independently.

p.2

The safety of children

The child told the inspector that they feel safe in the home. The child said, ‘Yes, I do feel safe here. You can tell because I have been spending more time here.’

p.2

The safety of children

The manager has made changes to the way information is recorded in the child’s plans. Staff ensure that they read any updates to the plans. Staff sign the plans to say that they have read, understood and will implement updates of the plan into practice.

p.2

The safety of children

Risk assessments outline what staff should do in relation to specific risks. This means that there is a consistent response from staff in addressing risks. Consequently, the number of times the child has been missing from home has significantly decreased.

p.2

The safety of children

All staff have repeated some medication training after an error was identified in an audit, and further reflection of this has taken place during team meetings. New staff members are now trained in the administration of medication as part of their induction to reduce the risk of future medication errors.

p.2

The effectiveness of leaders and managers

Since the last inspection, the home has appointed a manager. The manager is in the process of registering with Ofsted as required by regulation. The child told the inspector that they have seen notable improvements since the manager took over. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: 2672244 3 In relation to this, the child said, ‘Things have got much better. I like spending more time at home and things feel more organised.’

p.2

The effectiveness of leaders and managers

The staff and managers challenge external professionals to improve the outcomes for the child. This has enabled more meetings to take place around the permanence planning for the child. As a result, the child has a better understanding of their future plans.

p.3

The effectiveness of leaders and managers

Staff are positive about the management team and their experiences of working in the home. One staff member talked about the changes made since the manager has been in post and said, ‘He (the manager) is a breath of fresh air. He is honestly the best manager I have worked for.’

p.3

The effectiveness of leaders and managers

Managers understand the strengths and weaknesses of the home. The manager and responsible individual have met the requirements and recommendations made at the last inspection. Assurance inspection report for children’s home: 2672244 4
