Information about this inspection
the care of children the safety of children the effectiveness of leaders and managers. Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with the Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. p.1
Findings from the inspection
We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.
p.2
The care of children
Children make good progress. This is because there have been improvements in education attendance and engagement in learning. Since the last inspection, all three children have been attending full-time education.
p.2
The care of children
Children form good relationships with staff. Children enjoy taking part in activities both inside and outside of the home. Staff take part in these activities, such as going fishing, and they promote children’s hobbies. This helps children to build on their self-esteem, develop positive relationships with staff and take part in leisure activities that they enjoy.
p.2
The care of children
Children’s views are taken into account by staff. When children raise concerns, these are investigated by managers. Children are updated throughout investigations and are supported through mediation with staff to help rebuild relationships.
p.2
The safety of children
Individual management plans are in place and are updated regularly by staff. Plans are clear, which means staff are aware of de-escalation and intervention strategies to be used to support children effectively during times of crisis.
p.2
The safety of children
Restraint is only used as a last resort and is used in line with children’s individual plans. De-escalation is attempted prior to any use of restraint. Children are provided with support following a restraint incident.
p.2
The effectiveness of leaders and managers
A new manager has been recruited to the home. He is suitably qualified and experienced. The manager promptly submitted his application to register with Ofsted.
p.2
The effectiveness of leaders and managers
The manager has systems in place to help bring about improvements to the quality of care children receive. Oversight of incidents is robust and follow-up work is undertaken by managers and staff when needed. This has helped to ensure that all requirements raised at the full inspection have been met.
p.2
The effectiveness of leaders and managers
The recording of incidents has drastically improved. Records show clear use of nurture for the children to help de-escalate incidents. This has been an ongoing area for development during recent visits by Ofsted. Good managerial oversight by the new manager shows reflection with staff takes place following challenging incidents. Assurance inspection report for children's home: SC366080 3 Allegations of harm made by children are thoroughly investigated, with all appropriate persons informed. When there have been shortfalls in practice, senior leaders have acted effectively to address this. This provides assurances that safeguarding practice contributes to children being protected from harm.
