p.2
outstanding
Children make exceptional progress in a fun and homely environment, where humour and jokes are commonplace. Children form strong relationships with staff and enjoy living at the home.
p.3
outstanding
Staff provide exceptionally well-planned therapeutic care to the children. Staff are enthusiastic and committed. They access training and learning opportunities to meet all the children’s needs. Customised training from an external specialist service means that staff can provide care to the children in accordance with their individual needs. The care provided helps all children to feel safe and secure.
p.3
outstanding
Staff are committed to children’s progress and providing positive experiences. Children make excellent progress in key areas of their lives. Staff speak with pride about children’s achievements, and the smallest of achievements are acknowledged. Because of this, it is evident that children feel proud of themselves.
p.3
outstanding
Children are cared for by an exceptionally dedicated staff team. Staff morale is high, and they enjoy being at the home. Staff say that they love their jobs, and their caring attitude shines through in their interactions with children.
p.3
outstanding
All children attend school. Staff have excellent communication with education professionals. This joined-up approach ensures that children reach their full educational potential.
p.3
outstanding
The staff are imaginative in helping children to develop independence and life skills through individualised activities that safely consider children’s risks. Two children have been volunteering at a local nursery. This has enabled their confidence and trust in them to grow hugely since the last inspection.
p.3
outstanding
Staff take the time to understand what makes children happy. For example, staff purchased a scented candle for one child because they knew that it reminded the child of their home. This helped this child settle into the home when they first moved in.
p.3
outstanding
Staff understand the importance of maintaining relationships and support children to see their families and friends. One parent told the inspector, ‘I cannot praise [name of child]’s key worker enough. Nothing is too much for them. I cannot put into words how good they are.’
p.3
outstanding
The staff support children to keep safe. They use therapeutic approaches and Inspection report for children’s home: SC477209 4 guidance from children’s individualised support plans to provide children with structure and guidance. The use of restrictive physical intervention is much reduced. When needed, its use is proportionate to the escalating risk. Staff carry out research on how to enhance children’s life experiences, specific to each child’s targets. These innovative strategies help children to develop resilience and enable them to revisit activities they have found difficult.
p.3
outstanding
The children are supported to have honest discussions with the staff. This provides staff with the opportunity to sensitively address areas of concern. The approach from staff enables the children to manage their emotions more effectively and make informed decisions. This means the children are more able to make sensible and safe decisions when faced with barriers.
p.4
outstanding
Children respond well to the high levels of staff supervision and support. Key working with children is highly effective and is carried out using a range of resources. For example, staff have adapted a card game to play with children, which provokes discussion and develops conversation skills while having fun. Children engage well and can discuss issues that were previously very difficult for them to address.
p.4
outstanding
The planning around risk management is excellent. Risk and behaviour management plans are detailed, provide clear guidance for staff to follow and are informed by the children. One child showed the inspector a letter they had written to a politician they had seen on television talking angrily. The child wanted to share their strategies they had developed to cope with difficult situations and even included photos of themselves demonstrating these calming activities.
p.4
outstanding
Staff hold children’s safety and protection at the very centre of all that they do. The registered manager challenges professionals and advocate for children on how best to manage risk. Two children have deprivation of liberty orders, which include appropriate and agreed restrictions. These are adhered to by all staff to ensure the children’s safety.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding
The home is managed by a qualified and experienced registered manager. She is dual registered and manages her time effectively between the two homes. She is supported by a highly experienced deputy manager and together they form an exceptional leadership team. Their passion, dedication and high expectations feed through to the entire staff team, with the registered manager empowering staff to make important decisions about children’s care. This inclusive approach motivates staff to support children to make good progress.
p.4
The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding
The home benefits from having a stable and experienced core team who are devoted and child-focused. Staff clearly enjoy their work and describe their workplace as being ‘a second home’. Together, they provide continuity and stability in children’s lives. Inspection report for children’s home: SC477209 5 The registered manager is a strong advocate for all children. She has developed excellent relationships with external professionals involved with the children. She works hard to ensure that all children receive the best care and support in all aspects of their lives. One professional, who has very high regard for the home’s delivery of care, requested permission to share this home’s resources with other services in their local authority.
p.4

The registered manager uses these established professional relationships to challenge decisions effectively when they are not in the children’s best interests.
