p.2

outstanding

At the time of the inspection, there were five children living in the home. Since the last inspection, two children have successfully moved on from the home. Two new children have moved into the home. They are settled and making progress.

p.3

outstanding

The staff’s planning for children moving in and out of the home is excellent. For example, one child received exceptional support in preparation for their move. The home’s sensory room was converted into an independent living space, and extensive work was completed with the child to make sure that they had the skills to live on their own. Following the child moving out of the home, staff have stayed in regular contact with them in order to offer ongoing emotional support and guidance.

p.3

outstanding

Staff know the children well and provide them with consistently outstanding care. The staff work proactively to ensure that children have individualised care based on their differing needs, and where needed, specialist training and support are requested. The children receive additional support from the assistant physiologist, who has a regular presence in the home and builds positive and trusted relationships with the children. This means that the children make significant progress, and this is clearly evidenced, tracked and reported on effectively.

p.3

outstanding

Children attend educational settings. All five children receive full-time education, and four of the children attend mainstream school. The staff advocated for one child to move from the organisation’s school into mainstream education, and this was achieved. The child has made significant progress with their social development and has joined a basketball club. The staff work closely with schools to support the children who struggle with their education, and this was clarified in the feedback received.

p.3

outstanding

The children are encouraged to enjoy and achieve. All five children have hobbies and attend various clubs, such as basketball, football, rugby, swimming, horse riding and dance. The children are encouraged to have individual interests and engage in joint and group activities. This works well, and the children successfully have ‘family’ holidays together and are planning a trip abroad this year.

p.3

outstanding

The children say they are happy. All five children shared positive feedback with the inspector about the care they receive. The children spoke proudly of their home and shared encouraging feedback about the staff and registered manager. The inspector observed the children getting on well together and sharing reciprocal respect and kindness with each other and the staff.

p.3

outstanding

The children are living in a warm, welcoming and homely home. The staff have created a homely environment for the children to feel safe and nurtured. The home has personal touches throughout, such as photos of the children enjoying trips and Inspection report for children's home: SC476271 4 activities. There is consideration for children who experience sensory issues, and spaces are created to help them regulate. Each child has a personalised bedroom as requested, and they take pride in keeping their rooms clean and tidy.

p.3

outstanding

Children are safeguarded. The registered manager ensures that the staff have expert knowledge of the policies and procedures in place to keep children safe. The staff follow protocols well, and when needed, referrals are made to the designated safeguarding officer and followed through appropriately. As a result, children feel they are listened to and say they feel safe.

p.4

outstanding

The staff have a good understanding of the children’s risks and create individual behaviour and risk management plans that are reviewed and updated on a regular basis. These plans help to monitor the children’s progress and help them to take age-appropriate risks as part of their journeys to independence. This means that children have progressed to being allowed to use electronic devices, have free time and have sleepovers.

p.4

outstanding

Extensive work is completed with the children to ensure they have a satisfactory level of understanding in respect of keeping themselves safe. The staff use creative ways to engage and educate the children in direct and group sessions about their safety. This means that children’s risk-taking behaviours have been reduced over time. For some children, the progress they have made means they no longer need to have a bedroom door alarm.

p.4

outstanding

There are minimal low-level incidents in the home, and only two have required non- restrictive intervention. The staff always support children following incidents, and their voice is captured in debriefs and direct sessions. This is the same for two missing episodes that occurred during school time. There is good recording and management oversight in place.

p.4

outstanding

Staff help children to manage their changing behaviours. The staff use an effective model of therapeutic parenting when responding to and managing difficult behaviours. The children are supported to regulate their emotions and understand their triggers while receiving unconditional positive regard from the staff. The children are never sanctioned and quickly learn that the staff are there to support and care for them. The children also benefit from a therapy dog in training and access to other animals in the home, which have proven to be effective in deescalating heightened emotions.

p.4

outstanding

Children are instrumental in their care planning. The children are encouraged to complete their own care plans and attend meetings about their care. One child prepared a presentation of their thoughts and feelings to share at their meeting. This means children’s views are valued and considered as part of the decisions made about their care. This approach is seen in the home, with the children encouraged to Inspection report for children's home: SC476271 5 voice their opinion in numerous ways and influence decisions made. As a result, children feel listened to.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding

The registered manager is highly skilled and experienced. She is enthusiastic about her role, and this is evident in her child-focused approach. She is ambitious about the care the children receive and models remarkable practice, which is cascaded through her staff team. The registered manager goes above and beyond to ensure that the children always receive exceptional care. She maintains a presence in the home and keeps an open-door policy with the children.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding

The registered manager has maintained a committed core staff team despite changes in recruitment. The registered manager is aware of organisational challenges around recruitment and has developed innovative ways to try to attract and recruit staff. All new staff complete a thorough induction, which includes mandatory training. The staff receive additional and specialist training offered by the organisation’s clinical team and have access to an online training hub.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding

The registered manager uses research. She completed a management and development programme last year and completed extensive research into pet therapy for children. The registered manager and one team leader have recently presented at a local college to students studying areas of social care and have planned another session to look at adverse childhood experiences and complex trauma. This research-informed practice is evident in the home and used in reflective supervision and team meetings.

p.5

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: outstanding

The registered manager and staff have positive working relationships with other professionals. Positive feedback has been received on the communication between agencies and the proactive approach taken by the staff, who ensure that the children are advocated for and that regular updates and reports on their progress are readily received.

p.5

Staff feel inspired. The staff speak positively about the registered manager and the dedication she shows to improving the home and staff team. The staff receive quality supervision regularly that is reflective and supports their practice. All staff receive annual appraisals and have clear development plans in place.
