p.1

The provision is good

The childminder plans the curriculum well to provide children with a good range of experiences. There is a strong focus on supporting children's physical development, such as developing their hand and arm muscle strength for early writing. For example, children swirl ribbons using large-muscle movements in time to favourite songs. The childminder challenges children further, providing opportunities for children to be more precise in their movements, such as joining the dots when they draw and colour. Children show good control in their movements as they draw connecting lines. They begin to see patterns, learn the sequence of numbers and recognise numerals.

p.2

The provision is good

Children are happy and settled in the welcoming environment. They build close bonds with the caring childminder, who knows them well. Children confidently approach the inspector as they feel safe in the childminder's care. They are keen to talk about the 'magic potions' they have made and how they will make them big. Children enjoy listening to stories. They respond well to posed questions and make observations about the pictures, developing good communication and language skills.

n The childminder plans a broad and balanced range of experiences that help children to progress across all areas of their learning. She makes regular observations of children's engagement and interest in activities to plan focused activities to support children's learning. She has carefully considered children's interests, how they learn and their next steps in learning to help them reach their full potential. n Children confidently make choices about their play from the well-resourced environment. The childminder has carefully considered the position of sturdy furniture to encourage babies to reach and pull themselves up safely. She has provided opportunities for older children to develop their imagination and creativity, making resources, such as a water pump, available for children to add to their play independently. n Children are curious about the world around them. They show interest in how to

grow coriander seeds and onion bulbs, listening well to instructions. The childminder questions children well, encouraging them to think of new ways to transfer the soil to the pots. Children decide which tools to use and handle them safely. However, the childminder does not always encourage children to share what they know and recall previous experiences to make connections in their learning to further support their understanding. n Generally, children behave well, play nicely together and learn good manners. The childminder uses a range of strategies to help children learn behavioural

14 March 2023 expectations. However, on occasion, she is not consistent in how she helps children to understand the need to share resources and to value other children's choices, such as which book to read. n Children are aware of their own needs. They inform the childminder when they are hungry, understanding that they need to wash their hands before they eat. The childminder helps children to gain good independence skills. For example, she encourages children to undo wrappings and to peel their fruit. Children learn how to keep themselves safe, such as using knives safely to slice their banana. n The childminder works closely with parents to meet children's individual care and learning needs. She gains essential information as children start at the setting and keeps parents well informed about their children's day, which parents value. n The childminder uses training, research and professional discussions well to

improve her practice. She regularly reflects on what children have enjoyed at group sessions, such as loose-parts play, and provides additional opportunities at home to challenge children's learning even further.

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder uses her risk assessments effectively to provide children with a safe and secure environment. She identifies potential risks and puts measures in place to keep children safe, including when they are out walking or visiting venues in the local environment. The childminder accurately records children's attendance and has effective arrangements to ensure that known and authorised adults collect children. The childminder updates her safeguarding knowledge and has a good understanding of the possible indicators that a child is at risk of harm. She understands the procedure to follow should she have a concern about a child.
