p.1
The provision is inadequate
Safeguarding arrangements are not effective. The childminder does not have sufficient knowledge to identify or report child protection concerns. In addition, she does not know how to respond in the event of an allegation against her or anyone living in her home. However, the childminder has effective arrangements in place to support children's learning and development. Children are happy at this setting. They explore the play area confidently. The childminder engages with the children, asking them questions and giving them ample time to respond. Children enjoy trips out to local parks and playgroups.
p.2
The provision is inadequate
The childminder supports the children's personal, social and emotional development by encouraging them to share and be kind towards each other. Activities are planned to help support this. For example, the childminder sets up puzzles and games to help children learn to take turns. The children enjoy the praise they receive from the childminder when sharing toys.
p.2
The provision is inadequate
Children have good relationships with the childminder. She is always available when they want comfort and listens intently when they talk to her during play. Children proudly show the childminder what they are doing and respond well to her praise and encouragement.

need to do better?
n The childminder does not focus on ensuring that she keeps her knowledge and understanding of her role sufficiently up to date, resulting in significant weaknesses in her safeguarding knowledge. n The childminder enthusiastically interacts with the children, encouraging them to stay focused on activities for extended periods of time. She supports speech and language development well by praising children when they use new words and introducing new language during play. n The childminder plans around the children's interests. She extends activities to develop different areas of learning and development. For example, the children have shown a keen interest in animals, so the childminder took them on an outing to the zoo. She extended this activity at home with a display of animal books and toys. The children excitedly explored the resources together with the childminder. n Children have regular time outdoors to exercise. The childminder promotes a

This enables them to build on physical skills. n Children's mathematical knowledge is developed through play activities. The childminder uses the children's interests and incorporates the children's learning

8 February 2023 into this. For example, children love playing with plastic magnetic shapes. The childminder counts them with the children, talks to them about the shapes and colours and asks them to group them together. This builds on their recognition of similarities between colours and shapes. n Young children are developing an interest in books. The childminder sets up displays of age-appropriate books to encourage children to explore. The children choose books to look at with their friends and with the childminder. n Children's personal care needs are met through consistent routines. The childminder talks to the children about what she is doing, for example, when nappy changing and wiping noses. This helps the children feel secure. n Parents are kept updated with the children's activities throughout the day and their progress. The childminder works closely with the parents to learn about children's individual needs, which helps children settle when they first start and
