p.1

The provision is good

Children are relaxed and happy in the company of the childminder. They clearly feel safe and secure in the childminder's care. Children chat with ease about what they have done at the childminder's setting on the previous day. The childminder's rich educational programme ensures that children make good progress in all areas of learning. She talks to children about their own experiences. The childminder makes good use of these interactions to extend and embed children's knowledge and skills. For example, following a visit to the dentist, the childminder planned a linked activity to check that children know and remember how to brush their teeth properly. Children's mathematical development is good. They learn about number, shape and colour. The childminder makes sure that these activities are fun to maintain children's attention and enjoyment.

p.2

The provision is good

Children are very well behaved. They are polite, well mannered and follow instructions well. When asked if they would like to look at their favourite 'shape book' that the childminder has made, they reply, 'Yes, please'. Children develop very positive attitudes to their learning. They respond well to the childminder's supportive, nurturing approach. Children are able to focus well on activities and are fully engaged in their play.

n The childminder provides a running commentary to children's play throughout the day. She introduces and explains new words and concepts, such as 'electric toothbrush', 'cullen skink' and 'passion fruit' to children. Children respond well, expanding their vocabulary and showing interest and curiosity in learning more about the world around them. n Children's mathematical development is a strength of the childminder's provision. Children learn to recognise numerals and can recognise how many objects there are in a picture, without having to count them. They enjoy games with the childminder where they practise linking numerals and amounts, such as 'five' leaves. n Parents report very favourably on the childminder's trusted support and practice. Policies and procedures are clear and shared with parents. Parents are pleased to see their children are making good progress. Children that do not attend nursery or pre-school provision are given good opportunities to make friends and

socialise at the playgroups, which the childminder ensures that they regularly attend. n The childminder makes sure that children develop an understanding of other people, cultures and faiths. She makes good use of opportunities to explore things further with children when they show interest or curiosity. For example, children have recently learned about what it means to be blind and how guide

23 February 2023 dogs help people. n Children learn songs and listen to stories. The childminder enjoys reading a wide range of books to children. Occasionally, she does not present information very clearly to children and this detracts them from making the best possible progress. For example, when reading a new book to the children, the information was somewhat muddled as the childminder had not read the book before. n The childminder is a good role model for children. She is calm and caring. The childminder knows children well and makes every effort to make sure that their unique needs are met. She sets clear boundaries for children, and treats them with courtesy and respect. n Children are able to make choices and often lead the play. The childminder praises children often, but also points out when they might want to try another way when completing puzzles or forming shapes with magnetic bricks. This

supports children to be resilient and try again if something is not quite right the first time. n The experienced childminder understands that children need to master one skill before they move on to another. For example, she explains how children have progressed from using fingers to eat, then curved spoons and now proper cutlery. The childminder is teaching children to go to the toilet and dress independently. These important skills will support the children when they move on to school.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder demonstrates a sound understanding of how to protect children at the setting. She knows the signs and symptoms of abuse that may cause her to believe a child is at risk of harm. The childminder is aware of how to report any concerns and what to do should an allegation ever be made against her or a member of her household. The home is safe and secure, and children learn how to keep themselves safe.
