Context and focus of visit

From October 2018, Ofsted undertook to carry out monitoring visits to all newly directly funded providers of apprenticeship training provision which began to be funded from April 2017 or after by ESFA and/or the apprenticeship levy. This follow- up safeguarding monitoring visit has been carried out consequent to the provider being found to be making insufficient progress with respect to safeguarding at their previous monitoring visit. It follows the arrangements outlined in the ‘Further education and skills inspection handbook’.

p.2

Context and focus of visit

The focus of this visit is on the safeguarding theme below.

p.2

Reasonable progress

Since the previous monitoring visit, leaders have put in place appropriate policies and processes to keep apprentices safe. They have appointed and trained additional designated safeguarding leaders. Apprentices know who these people are and can explain how they would report any concerns that they have. Apprentices state that they would be comfortable discussing any concerns and trust that staff would take appropriate action.

p.2

Reasonable progress

Leaders ensure that tutors and governors are suitable to work with apprentices. They carry out effective background checks, including with the Disclosure and Barring Service, and check qualifications and the right to work in the United Kingdom. Tutors now undergo helpful training in safeguarding and ‘Prevent’ duty throughout their employment. This training helps tutors to keep apprentices safe.

p.2

Reasonable progress

Leaders and tutors have taken appropriate steps to develop relevant teaching materials in relation to safeguarding and fundamental British values. Designated safeguarding leaders work with the regional ‘Prevent’ duty coordinator to keep up to date with local risks. The teaching materials that they produce are fit for purpose and have been designed to reinforce knowledge and understanding. Leaders have recently begun to issue safeguarding newsletters, one of which is designed for employers and another for apprentices, that provide helpful information.

p.2

Reasonable progress

Leaders and tutors have taken steps to ensure that apprentices feel safe and that they have provided safeguarding training appropriate to their needs. Apprentices say that they feel safe and know how to keep themselves safe, both in their workplace and at the training provider. For example, level 2 floor laying apprentices work Monitoring visit: Mybe Awards Limited, 25 January 2023 alongside another employee when on site and remain with other people when travelling around sites.

p.2

Reasonable progress

Leaders and tutors have taken clear steps to develop apprentices’ knowledge and understanding of radicalisation and extremist behaviours. They have ensured that all apprentices and their employers complete training on the ‘Prevent’ duty guidance and have developed a range of activities and resources to reinforce learning. However, a few apprentices are unable to recognise the signs of radicalisation and extremist behaviours. Monitoring visit: Mybe Awards Limited, 25 January 2023 regulates and inspects to achieve excellence in the care of children and young people, and in education and skills for learners of all ages. It regulates and inspects childcare and children’s social care, and inspects the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass), schools, colleges, initial teacher training, further education and skills, adult and community learning, and education and training in prisons and other secure establishments.
