p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

One child has lived at the home for several years. As a result, they have built up strong relationships with the staff team. The child feels ready for their next move and says the staff have helped them to get to this stage.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The physical health needs of the child are met. However, delays in appropriate mental health support mean that the staff have found it difficult to engage and support the child in different areas of their life, including education.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The staff find creative ways of delivering education in the home and have appropriately raised concerns with the child’s placing authority. However, the absence of a solution to this and the consequent lack of routine and structure further impact the child’s emotional well-being.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Time with family is supported by the staff team, and there has been progress made with regards to how this is arranged. A parent of the child said, ‘I love them being there. They feel comfortable and that makes me feel comfortable.’

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The child has engaged in their independence preparation, and the staff are good advocates for the child with regards to their wishes and feelings for their future plans.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The home has been redecorated since the last inspection. However, there are some areas that still require attention, including the child’s bedroom floor, which needs to be replaced and repainted.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

The child has made significant progress with regards to her behaviour and how she manages it. Risk management plans are clear and evidence a decrease in incidents. This means that the child has learned new strategies to be able to manage situations they find difficult. One professional said the child has made ‘tremendous progress’ since moving into the home.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

The child is aware of how to make a complaint and is supported to do so. As a result, the child feels listened to and that their experiences are important. Staff support the child throughout the process and ensure they are provided with the outcome of any complaint that they have made. Where necessary, referrals have been made to the local authority designated officer.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

When consequences are used to help support the child’s behaviour, they are restorative in nature and discussed with the child. The child’s views on consequences are considered, and the manager reports on their effectiveness. Inspection report for children’s home: SC456857 4 The trusting relationships between the staff and the child mean that the child speaks openly with them about things they are worried about. This means that the staff can support the child effectively and ensure that the child is appropriately safeguarded.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

When room searches have been carried out to minimise risk, these have been completed sensitively and with the child’s knowledge.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager is suitably experienced and is currently completing her qualification. She is supported by a knowledgeable and experienced deputy manager.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager makes good use of monitoring systems in the home and actively seeks feedback to make improvements. However, the manager does not always have full oversight of the process and outcome of complaints made. This has not impacted on children but has the potential to do so.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Staff say they feel supported and listened to. Supervisions are held regularly and offer staff the opportunity to reflect on their practice. However, staff appraisals lack an assessment of their performance and do not include feedback from professionals and children.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager is a good advocate for children and will confidently challenge professionals when needed. This ensures that the child’s needs and views are represented.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

Regular team meetings are well attended and ensure that the staff have all the information they need. Children are invited to the meetings, and there are clear action plans in place.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The home’s development plan is regularly reviewed and updated. However, the manager has not reviewed the statement of purpose to ensure it is reflective of the home’s current staffing situation. Inspection report for children’s home: SC456857 5
