Inspection report for children's home - monitoring visit: SC065535 1 SC065535 Registered provider: S P Homes Limited

p.1

Inspected under the social care common inspection framework

p.1

Information about this children’s home

This privately run home provides care for up to six children who may experience social and emotional difficulties.

p.1

This monitoring visit

Since the last inspection, two children have moved into the home and have settled well. Some improvements have been achieved in the quality of care provided to children. The home environment is now clean, welcoming and hazard free. A child’s broken bed has been replaced. Leaders and managers are pleased with the progress made and acknowledge that more work is needed to further improve children’s outcomes and experiences.

p.1

This monitoring visit

Children’s attendance and engagement with education and formal learning is inconsistent. Two children who recently moved to the home are having tuition for 10 hours a week. Another has just secured a place at college. One child is in full-time education, but their attendance is poor. More needs to be done to ensure that all children are enabled, encouraged and supported to attend full-time education.

p.1

This monitoring visit

Leaders and managers have devised an action plan to help staff better support a child to manage their diabetes. This plan has not yet been shared across the staff team to ensure that all staff are equipped with the knowledge and skills to safely support diabetes management. The child receives support from a specialist diabetes nurse. Staff’s understanding and knowledge of managing diabetes could be further enhanced with refresher training.

p.1

This monitoring visit

The tools used to assess and evaluate risk have improved. The format for assessing risk is more comprehensive and better identifies the presenting risks to children, as Inspection report for children's home - monitoring visit: SC065535 2 well as protective strategies. These improvements are positive, but they need to be embedded and sustained.

p.1

This monitoring visit

A new behaviour support plan has been devised to help staff to promote positive behaviour and deter and de-escalate unwanted behaviours. These plans could be further strengthened by linking them to the children’s risk assessments.

p.2

This monitoring visit

The last inspection identified that staff do not undertake checks of children’s bedrooms when there are concerns about children’s welfare and safety. Staff are now undertaking bedroom checks, when necessary, which enhances children’s safety. Further work is needed to ensure that all staff are clear about the process and purpose of undertaking room checks and room searches, and record these consistently.

p.2

This monitoring visit

There has been one notifiable incident reported to Ofsted since the last inspection. Leaders and managers have ensured that all relevant safeguarding agencies and Ofsted are notified about serious incidents as required.

p.2

This monitoring visit

The home does not have a registered manager. A suitably experienced operations manager is currently leading the home. A new manager has been appointed and their start date has yet to be confirmed.

p.2

This monitoring visit

Staff training designed to ensure that staff have the necessary skills and knowledge to safely meet the needs of children is still an area for improvement. This specifically relates to staff’s awareness and understanding of all forms of child exploitation. Training in relation to child criminal exploitation and substance misuse is booked for all staff to attend.

p.2

This monitoring visit

Although the three compliance notices have been adequately met, further work is needed to ensure that these improvements are embedded and sustained. Some requirements raised at the last inspection were not monitored at this inspection and have therefore been carried over. Inspection report for children's home - monitoring visit: SC065535 3
