p.1

The provision is inadequate

The childminder does not ensure that written consent is obtained from parents to enable her to administer medication to children. This potentially compromises children's health and safety. Nevertheless, children enjoy attending this welcoming and nurturing childcare provision. Children have lots of activities to play with. The childminder ensures that she plans a curriculum that enables all children to learn well. Children enjoy her enthusiastic praise for their efforts, and confidently welcome her into their play. They are confident in the environment, showing that they feel settled and secure.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

The childminder has strong relationships with the children and is a good role model. Children behave well and learn how to share and take turns. When playing with the rice, two children want the same spoon. The childminder speaks with them about the importance of taking turns with the equipment. They listen to her and begin to work together in harmony. Children are praised for listening to the childminder, which helps to build their confidence and self-esteem.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

Children have good opportunities to select resources to adapt their play, make decisions and direct their learning. They show good dexterity and small-muscle skills as they scoop rice into cups and bottles. They work together to build a train track, using their good communication skills to decide which bit should go where and which trains they want to use.

n Children's welfare and safety are potentially compromised as the childminder does not request written consent from parents to enable her to administer long- term medication. Consequently, the childminder cannot ensure that all necessary medication is administered promptly and safely. n Parents are given ideas about how to support their children's learning at home. They comment on the positive environment that the childminder offers and the good progress that their children make while in her care. n Children learn about healthy eating and have good attitudes towards food. They are offered a variety of foods, and the childminder helps them to learn how foods contribute to a healthy lifestyle. Mealtimes are sociable occasions where children talk happily to each other and the childminder. n The childminder knows the children well. She uses her knowledge to plan and tailor the curriculum to reflect the needs of all children in her care. For example,

role-play and small-world activities are continually accessible to the children to help them to explore their growing imagination and interests. As a result, all children make good progress in their learning and development. n The childminder completes all mandatory training, such as paediatric first aid

9 January 2023 and safeguarding. She talks to other childminders in the locality to discuss current practices and any changes. However, the childminder does not explore her continuous professional development to help her to raise the quality of education for children further. n The childminder helps children to learn about the world around them through a variety of experiences. For example, she takes children into the local community to see people who are different from them. She knows that the children in her care have varied and diverse needs. However, she does not consider ways to help them to deepen their understanding of different cultures in order to widen their understanding of the world. n Children's language and communication skills are promoted well. The childminder talks to the children and has meaningful conversations where she uses effective questioning to promote their thinking skills. Children learn new

words, such as 'squishy' and 'sprinkle'. The childminder praises the children for repeating these words back to her. n The childminder organises the environment well. Children are able to make choices in how and where they want to play. The childminder involves herself in children's play, challenging their thinking as she asks them questions. For example, when exploring the rice play, she asks, 'how many now?' and 'how many more?' when children use spoons to fill cups. n Children develop their independence well. They are encouraged by the childminder to put on their coats and shoes. They are given time to put doll's clothing on and wash their hands before meals and snacks.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder does not ensure that written parental consent is obtained for administering all medications that children require. This may delay any immediate treatment that children may need, potentially impacting their safety and well-being. Despite this, the childminder does have a secure knowledge and understanding of safeguarding. She knows how to identify a child who may be at risk of harm and how to ensure that this is reported appropriately. The childminder attends safeguarding training to keep her knowledge of child protection up to date. She completes daily checks of the environment indoors and outside to ensure that areas that children access are free from hazards.
