p.1

The provision requires improvement

Children enjoy their time at the childminder's and are happy and settled. They are busy and active learners. Children engage in free play for most of the day. This means the curriculum becomes narrow. At times, children move quickly from one toy to another with limited focus. However, at other times, children benefit from encouragement from the childminder to support their learning. For example, they confidently respond to her questions and name different modes of transport, when looking at a book. This helps maintain their concentration. Children make steady, but not consistently good progress, in all areas of their learning and development. Although the childminder recognises children's abilities and what they need to learn next, she does not focus on planning for their learning needs precisely enough.

The provision requires improvement

Children behave well. They learn to take turns and respect the needs of others with support from the childminder. For instance, children wait patiently while she untangles the cables of their toy cranes when playing with the trains. Children develop confidence and self-esteem. They react positively to the childminder's consistent praise for their achievements. Children develop strong bonds with the childminder. They feel safe and secure in her care.

need to do better?

n The childminder carries out a risk assessment of her home. She identifies possible risks appropriately but does not always take prompt action to address them, particularly in the front and back garden. For instance, there are potential hazards, such as loose paving, a hole in the side gate and plants and shrubs that might be harmful to children. However, the childminder supervises children very closely and relies on this to keep them safe. This reduces the impact of hazards on children's safety. n The childminder reads and sings to children frequently. Children take part in finger rhymes with numbers, such as the crocodile and monkey song. However, the same activity does not benefit all of the children. For instance, they do not all have a puppet to manipulate or receive support for counting numbers. Therefore, some children do better than others in their physical and mathematical development. n Children freely access writing materials to help develop their emerging writing

skills. They persevere in their chosen task and concentrate appropriately when they make random marks on the white board. Children begin to develop some skills they need for the next stage in their learning. n The childminder takes children on a variety of outings to support their physical and emotional health. For example, they visit parks, go on walks in the woods and to National Trust houses and gardens. Children learn about the local community in which they live. The childminder has a suitable range of play

For example, children practise pouring their own drinks and cutting up a banana at snack time. They develop increasing control and coordination. Children learn about healthy practices, such as washing their hands before eating. They understand about good oral health. n Parents share information about their children's starting points. This helps children settle quickly. Parents are informed about their children's progress and know how to continue their children's learning at home. The childminder shares information with other professionals at settings children attend. This helps to maintain consistency of care and learning. n The childminder has recently evaluated her practice and identifies some areas for improvement. She is committed to ongoing training. The childminder is

beginning to work more closely with parents to support children with English as an additional language. However, the childminder does not actively use a variety of teaching strategies to promote children's language at home. Children do not make the best possible progress that they can.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has a secure understanding of child protection issues and the risks associated with the use of mobile phones. She is familiar with the signs and symptoms of abuse and neglect and knows how to recognise if a child is being exposed to extremist views. The childminder knows the procedure to follow should she have a concern about a child or if an allegation is made against herself. She has joined the NSPCC to get regular updates about safeguarding issues. The childminder has a current paediatric first-aid certificate.
