p.1

The provision is good

Children thrive in the care of this skilled and knowledgeable childminder. He knows children extremely well, tailoring his setting to meet their individual learning and development needs. Activities are engaging and encourage children to explore their own interests. The childminder has high expectations and understands how to extend children's learning, providing timely support and encouragement when necessary. For example, children count the dots on a dice. When they miscount, the childminder encourages them to have another go, but to count more slowly this time. When children are successful, they show real pride in their achievements and immediately have another go.

p.2

The provision is good

Children are very happy and secure. They are well behaved and clearly understand the setting's routines and the childminder's expectations. They play well together, sharing toys and taking turns appropriately. Older children show consideration for their younger friends. They help them when they are having difficulties and praise them when they do something well.

p.2

The provision is good

Children learning outside is a key feature of the setting. They are active in the park and playground every day. Children enjoy learning to ride their bicycles, feeding the ducks and practising their climbing skills. The childminder ensures that children understand how to keep themselves safe outside. He teaches children how to cross the paths and use the large equipment safely, gently reminding them when they forget the safety rules.

need to do better?

n The childminder has a very good understanding of how young children learn. He provides a broad range of activities that cover all the areas of learning in the early years foundation stage. Children engage in meaningful hands-on activities, which encourage them to practise and refine their skills. n The childminder has a clear intention for his setting. He focuses on the basic skills which children need to be successful in their learning. The childminder supports children's transitions to the next stage in their education by supplying detailed reports and information to other settings and schools. This ensures that children's moves are seamless and they settle quickly and confidently. n The childminder's communication and language teaching is a strength. He models spoken English well. The childminder narrates on children's play, constantly exposing them to language. He introduces them to new words,

explaining their meaning and encouraging the children to practise saying and using them in simple sentences. However, sometimes, the childminder does not give children enough thinking time or time to consider their responses to his questions.

p.2

need to do better?

11 January 2023 n Children's mathematical learning is good. The childminder seizes every opportunity to reinforce early number skills. For example, when tidying up the large foam construction pieces, he counts them as children throw them to him and asks them to name their colour. n The childminder places a priority on children's personal, social and emotional development. Children are encouraged to understand and discuss their feelings through regular circle and story times. n The childminder teaches children to respect others and develops their understanding of other cultures and their beliefs. He challenges any stereotypical behaviours and celebrates diversity. This increases children's awareness of difference and helps them to understand the community and the world which they live in. n Overall, children become independent. All children learn how to care for themselves. However, the childminder does not consistently identify every

need to do better?

opportunity for children to practise their independent self-care skills. For example, when getting ready to go outside, he puts on children's coats and shoes for them, rather than letting them do it themselves. n The curriculum for children's physical development is very good. Children have many opportunities to practise their large-muscle skills as they run, jump and play ball games in the fresh air. They eat healthy food that they prepare with the childminder each day. n The childminder takes his own professional development seriously. He makes sure that his knowledge and teaching practice skills are up to date. The childminder seeks advice and support from other childminders and the local authority to further develop his provision. n Parents are extremely complimentary about the setting. They feel that the childminder goes over and above what is expected to keep them informed about their children's learning and progress. Parents value his daily communications

need to do better?

about their children and the time he takes to support them when they need parenting advice. They are very happy with the progress which their children make and comment on how confident and secure their children have become.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has a good understanding of his role in safeguarding children. He has a thorough knowledge of how to identify signs that a child might be at risk from harm and knows who he should report any potential concerns to. The childminder undertakes regular training to keep his safeguarding knowledge up to date. He teaches children how to keep themselves safe, inside and when out on visits to the local area. The childminder ensures that his home is safe and risk free. He carries out regular risk assessments, helping him to identify and remove possible hazards to keep children safe at all times.

p.3

should:

n give children enough time to think and process their responses to questions, to support their understanding and spoken language skills n identify all opportunities for children to practise their independent self-care skills, to further build their confidence and help them to become more self-sufficient.
