p.1
The provision is good
Children are settled, safe and secure. They demonstrate close, meaningful relationships with the childminder and her assistant. Babies and young children confidently point and gain eye contact to signal their preferences for favourite toys. Their interests are followed closely by the childminder, as she makes sure resources with buttons and noises are nearby for children to explore.
p.2
The provision is good
Children excitedly use their imagination as they talk about the jobs of the different small-world characters in their game. For example, children explain that the postal worker is having a day off and that the fire fighter is doing their job instead. The childminder's assistant supports this by discussing the roles and duties of these jobs. Children are interested in their play and are developing positive attitudes to learning.
p.2
The provision is good
The childminder supports babies in becoming confident talkers by frequently introducing new language. For example, when they explore the play dough, they are clearly reminded of each colour's name. Furthermore, when older children begin to explore the weighing scales, the childminder's assistant clearly adds vocabulary such as 'lighter' and 'heavier' to support children's understanding. Children are building strong conversational skills through the motivating and challenging activities provided for them.
p.2
need to do better?
n The childminder has high expectations for all children. She implements an ambitious curriculum that supports each child individually. The childminder creates activities that involve a variety of resources, each focused at children's different level of ability. For example, older children are supported in understanding balance and weight, while younger children are taught language relating to shape and number recognition. Children are engaged in the activity for an extended period as they confidently develop early mathematical skills. n The childminder encourages children to understand the importance of good manners. Children demonstrate that they know this, as they often say 'please' and 'thank you' during their play. They follow instructions with ease as they happily tidy up together before story time. Children are behaving well and demonstrate high levels of respect for one another. n Parents share that they are happy with the care received by the childminder.
p.2
need to do better?
They share that the childminder often updates them with activities that the children have been doing during the day. However, at times, parents are not always clear on what children are working towards in their learning. As a result, parents cannot fully extend this learning at home to support children's progress. n Children have access to a variety of activities and outings that allow them to

5 January 2023 explore their physical skills. For example, the childminder arranges trips out to the nearby small beach, local park and pond, where she encourages children to manage risks in their play as they run, climb and balance. n Children engage in conversations about food and healthy choices. The childminder's assistant extends this discussion further and encourages children to think about which foods are good for us. He then explains how they grow and where they have come from. Following this, children talk about the importance of caring for their teeth. Children are learning about the meaning of living a healthy lifestyle. n The childminder helps to develop children's literacy skills through activities, such as singing and story time. For example, children join in with words and actions enthusiastically as they sing. They thoroughly enjoy story time, as they use props to explore the plot and excitedly anticipate what comes next.
