p.2
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The one child who lives in the home has made good progress since moving into the home in July 2021. She is supported by a staff team that has, in the main, remained stable. However, the child and some staff told the inspector that sometimes there appear to be too many adults in the home. This is noted in records as having a negative impact on the child. Nonetheless, the child has formed trusting and positive relationships with the adults, and she told the inspector that she has adults she can talk to.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
The staff team has the necessary skills and experience to use a child-centred approach. Professionals who contributed to this inspection spoke positively about the quality of care and how it has contributed to the progress of the child.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Staff know and understand the child very well. The inspector observed warm and loving interactions between the child and the staff. They have supported her to enjoy new experiences, make friends and visit family. In particular, they have encouraged and helped her to develop her skills in singing, for example, taking her to a recording studio. As a result, the child is growing in confidence.
p.3
Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good
Since living in the home, the child’s attendance at school has improved. However, her attendance has been interrupted by periods of being excluded. The inspector found that, for the most recent two-day period of exclusion, and the following two weeks when the child was supported to learn at home, the alternative learning opportunities fell short of being good enough. For example, the child was being taken to local cafes to study. The child told the inspector that she did not like being out of school and having to learn at home or in cafes.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
The registered manager and staff know the child well and identify potential risks and triggers. Plans for reducing these risks are detailed and effective and provide the staff with strategies to support the child when they are upset. The inspector was particularly impressed with the personalised language and terminology that is used in the child’s records and plans.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Since the child’s move into the home, she has gone missing on several occasions from both home and school. On some of these occasions, the child has been very upset and has placed herself at risk. However, the manager and staff have been swift to respond. All information is shared with professionals, and records capture the supportive discussions that take place between the child and the staff.
p.3
How well children and young people are helped and protected: good
Structured and personalised responses by staff are managed well and there is minimal use of physical intervention. On the occasions the child has needed to be held by the staff, this is proportionate and has led to the child being kept safe. The Inspection report for children's home: SC457137 4 child is gradually learning how to manage their anxieties and worries, and this is resulting in the planned reduction in the number of staff required.
p.3
good
The home is led by a registered manager who is experienced and has recently qualified. Since the previous inspection in June 2021, there has been a change in the registered manager. The current registered manager has previously led and managed the home, and therefore returns, providing the staff with a sense of stability and continuity.
p.4
good
Over the last 12 months, the staff team has remained relatively stable. However, the manager has not always made effective use of core staff to support the child. This has ultimately led to too many adults being in the home at any one time.
p.4
good
Staff spoke positively of the support, training and supervision they receive. They told the inspector that they feel valued and work well as a team. Their feedback reflects the warm ethos of the home.
p.4
good
Management oversight of the home is, in the main, good. However, the inspector found several shortfalls, for example, some records were not complete and a supervision record and two management analysis documents were not signed and dated by the author. Some documents lacked clarity of who was responsible and accountable for the actions going forward.
p.4
good
The manager and staff advocate well for the children and by doing so they are ensuring that the child’s views and wishes remain central to their plans. However, the manager had failed to ensure that there was a good-quality plan in place for alternative education, for the times when the child is not attending formal education.
