p.1

The provision is inadequate

Children's safety cannot be guaranteed. The childminder does not provide her new assistants with effective training to ensure they fully understand their roles and responsibilities to keep children safe. She does not ensure that the adult-to-child ratios are met.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

Children make good progress in their learning. They gain a wide range of useful skills that prepare them well for the next stage of their learning and eventual move to school. Babies develop their understanding of the world. They learn how resources work and test out their own ideas. For example, they shake bottles to try to remove a ball, then experiment with squeezing the bottle so that the air pressure forces the ball out of the top.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

The childminder supports children's behaviour, and provides good opportunities for them to develop their social skills. Children follow simple instructions and respond well to gentle reminders relating to their behaviour. They enjoy the company of others and show an interest in what their friends are doing. Older babies develop good levels of concentration and enjoy listening to a story with older children.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

The childminder prioritises children's emotional security. Children form close bonds with her. Babies learn to separate from their parents, and open their arms to greet the childminder with a hug when they arrive.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder works with her co-childminder as a team. However, she has failed to identify breaches of the legal requirements to safeguard children. n The childminder prioritises her professional development and strives to continually extend her strong understanding of child development. However, her induction arrangements for new assistants are ineffective. The childminder has not provided all assistants with effective training to ensure they understand her safeguarding policy. This includes health and safety, such as fire evacuation procedures. This puts children at risk of potential harm. n The childminder understands the process for vetting the suitability of assistants. However, she has failed to ensure that staffing arrangements meet the legal requirements. She has completed a risk assessment to ensure that an assistant, whose suitability has not been verified, is not left unsupervised with children.

p.2

need to do better?

However, she has not considered the impact that this has on the adult-to-child ratios. This means that when she has five children under the age of three in her care, she is in breach of the legal requirements. n The childminder is a skilled teacher and is very knowledgeable about child development. She has created an ambitious curriculum that clearly sets out her

p.2

need to do better?

13 December 2022 plans for children to build on what they already know and can do. Her curriculum for children's communication and language development is planned meticulously. She understands the essential language that children need to learn, and skilfully supports them to develop good speaking skills. Children develop their understanding of new words through their play. For example, they learn about the difference between 'on', 'off', 'hot', 'cold', 'fast' and 'slow'. n The childminder monitors children's progress carefully. She uses her observations of children's achievements to determine what they need to know next. She plans a range of exciting activities that motivate children to play, explore and make new discoveries. However, on occasion, she does not recognise when she needs to adapt teaching so that babies are benefiting fully from the teaching provided. n The childminder provides children with good opportunities to build their physical

skills. Babies develop their awareness of the space around them as they crawl through tunnels. They negotiate obstacles and build their strength as they climb on equipment. n Children gain good independence. They access their own drinks, and show an awareness of the needs of others by passing them a drink of water. Babies learn to feed themselves with a spoon or with their fingers. They become aware of their physical requirements and find ways to communicate their needs and wishes. n Parent partnerships are effective. The childminder values the contributions that parents make to children's ongoing assessments, and regularly shares information with them to support their continued learning at home. Parents speak positively about the progress that their children make.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder does not fully understand her role and responsibility to ensure children's safety. She does not ensure that her safeguarding policies and procedures are prioritised when she provides induction training to new assistants. This means that they do not fully understand the procedures to follow should they need to report a concern about a child or an adult working with children. Although her assistant has a general understanding of signs that may indicate that a child is at risk, this is not sufficient to be alert to all aspects of safeguarding children. That said, the childminder keeps her own knowledge of safeguarding children updated. She is aware of a wide range of potential indicators that a child is at risk of harm, and knows how to report these.
