Inspection of Mr Wobbles Day Nursery 17 Gloucester Road, Kidsgrove, Stoke-On-Trent, Staffordshire ST7 1EH

Overall effectiveness Inadequate

The quality of education Good Behaviour and attitudes Good Personal development Inadequate Leadership and management Inadequate Overall effectiveness at previous inspection Requires improvement

p.1

The provision is inadequate

Children's safety is not assured. The provider has not ensured that recruitment procedures are rigorous enough in order to assess the suitability of staff working with children. That said, children develop strong, nurturing relationships with staff at this welcoming nursery. Staff are kind and calm with children. This helps children to become confident learners. Staff are sensitive to the needs of babies and offer them physical and emotional comfort when they need it. Children behave well and they understand the rules and boundaries. They listen carefully to staff instructions and understand what is expected of them during the day. For example, children line up when it is time to go inside. They learn to take turns with one another with adult support.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

Children access a variety of activities, such as drawing, sand and water play, small- world play and a good selection of their favourite stories. They show good concentration skills while they build towers, and they enjoy taking part in singing sessions. Staff model language which children repeat and use in their play. This helps to develop children's vocabulary. Children develop their independence during their time at the nursery. For example, young babies are supported to feed themselves and older children pour their own drinks and put their coats on. Staff promote independence in self-care and encourage children to lead their own play and learning.

p.2

need to do better?

n The provider lacks knowledge and understanding of how to check staff's suitability to work with children. Although there is an appropriate written procedure in place, this is not always followed. The provider has failed to obtain sufficient information about staff who work directly with children. Vetting checks have not been completed for all staff. This means that the provider cannot make an informed decision about staff's suitability to work with children, which puts their safety at risk. n The curriculum provided stimulates the interests of children and staff support children's learning and development well. They get to know children and build strong relationships with them. Staff discuss individual children's interests and learning needs with their parents. Children are keen to get involved in the activities on offer and show positive attitudes to learning. The activities and experiences planned help children make good progress from their starting points

and they gain a range of skills that aid their eventual move to school. n Staff effectively support children's communication skills. They use songs and rhymes to develop children's understanding of common words and language patterns. They speak slowly and clearly to children, repeating words and modelling sentences, so that they hear the correct way to say them. Children

need to do better?

4 November 2022 who speak English as an additional language are encouraged to speak their home language and staff use words and phrases to encourage them. n Staff provide opportunities for children to develop their literacy skills. For instance, children listen to stories regularly and staff encourage children to make marks using a range of materials to help develop their early writing skills. Children have access to resources and activities to develop their mathematical skills. For example, staff encourage children to identify numbers and to arrange blocks in order of size. However, monitoring of teaching has not been precise enough to identify where some staff need further support and guidance. On occasion, some staff interactions do not help to fully extend children's learning. n Children's physical development is well supported. They enjoy playing in the outside area, running, riding the tricycles and balancing carefully on the

equipment. Children explore with interest and confidently use climbing equipment. They show mobility, coordination and balance. Younger children have space to roll and partake in 'tummy time', while older babies can cruise around furniture in preparation for starting to walk. n Parents are complimentary about the service they receive and comment positively on the regular feedback they get from staff about their child's day. Staff observe and assess children's learning regularly. They keep parents informed about their children's learning and work together to plan what children need to learn next. n The staff team work together effectively. They have made some changes to how they plan for children's learning and design the play environment. However, children in the pre-school room are sometimes distracted because noise levels are too high, making it more difficult for children to listen and concentrate.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

Children are not properly safeguarded. Weaknesses in the recruitment and vetting processes completed for staff mean that the provider cannot be assured that they are suitable to work with children. Despite this, staff know the signs and symptoms that may indicate that a child is at risk from harm. This includes safeguarding issues that may affect children, such as the 'Prevent' duty, female genital mutilation and county lines. They know how to report these concerns and how to raise them directly with relevant agencies, if ever needed. Staff know how to whistle-blow and report concerns regarding adults to the relevant agencies.
