Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

At the time of this inspection, there was one child living at the home. The child moved into the home in September 2022. They have settled in quickly and were warmly welcomed by staff. A specialist worker said, ‘I am really pleased with how well he has settled. He has positive relationships with staff. The child is positive about his future.’

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The child benefits from good-quality care that promotes his needs effectively and contributes to change and improvement in his life. The child is making rapid progress in relation to their starting points across aspects of their welfare and their physical, social, emotional and behavioural development. The child said, ‘The staff are good kind people. I feel like everything is good. I have everything that I need.’

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The child is now attending school on a regular basis with support and encouragement from staff. The child is making good progress with their education. Staff work closely with school staff to promote the child’s learning and educational achievements. Staff have requested outstanding plans, such as a personal education plan, and education, health and care plan to support the child’s learning. The child said, ‘Staff have helped to put me into a routine. School is going well. I have made some friends already.’

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Staff work closely with health professionals to ensure that the child’s health needs are consistently met. Medical consent is in place, so staff are familiar with the types of health decisions and responsibilities that are delegated to them. The child is registered with all relevant health services and has access to these services when they need them. There are effective arrangements to promote the child’s good health.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The child benefits from family time on a regular basis. Consequently, they sustain their close relationships with the people who are most important to them. Staff provide the child with positive and constructive activities. The child enjoys playing for a basketball team, going to the gym, and boxing on a regular basis. The child’s talents, interests and hobbies are encouraged.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Risks associated with the child are managed well by staff. The child is kept safe and feels safe. Unsafe behaviours have decreased considerably. For example, there have been no issues with missing-from-home incidents, substance misuse or offending since the child came to live at the home. Robust safety plans and safe working practices protect the child and keep him safe from harm.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

When children have gone missing from the home, staff have worked closely with the police and followed the home’s procedures to secure children’s safe return. Inspection report for children’s home: SC451174 4 Staff are trained in de-escalation, which enables them to manage children’s behaviours safely and effectively. Since the last inspection, there has been one isolated incident that has required staff to use a low-level physical intervention.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff have high expectations of children’s behaviour and consistently praise and reward positive behaviour. Consequences used to address negative behaviour are fair and proportionate.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

There have been no significant incidents since the child moved into the home. When significant incidents have occurred with other children living in the home, the staff team has taken action to report any concerns to the relevant authorities in order to protect children from harm. However, some significant incident records did not contain a recorded outcome or lessons learned from practice. A requirement is made in respect of this issue.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

The home provides a physically safe, appropriately secure, welcoming and homely living environment for children. Health and safety matters are addressed effectively to ensure that a safe environment is maintained. The child has personalised his bedroom in line with his needs and expressed wishes. The child is developing a real sense of permanence and belonging.
