p.1

The provision requires improvement

Staff provide a warm and welcoming environment for children. Children are comforted by staff with cuddles and reassurance to help them feel safe. Children eagerly join in with sensory activities and resources, such as sand, as they empty and fill containers. Staff use this activity effectively to promote other areas of learning, such as mathematics. They introduce children to the concepts of 'less', 'more', 'empty' and 'full'. However, overall, the quality of some staff's teaching is variable. Children do not consistently benefit from good-quality experiences. This hinders the progress that some children make, especially those who speak English as an additional language.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

The curriculum covers the seven areas of learning, and staff complete observations and assessments of children's learning. Staff say that they base their planning on children's interests and developmental needs. However, they do not always provide activities that engage and interest all children fully. At times, staff do not prepare and organise the activities well enough, meaning that children wait for prolonged periods of time with nothing to do.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

On occasion, key persons do not ensure that care is tailored to the individual needs of each child. For example, children who are tired are not encouraged to have a rest. This negatively impacts their well-being. Children generally behave well, and staff support their growing understanding of the rules and expectations of the setting. Children are reminded to say 'please' and 'thank you' when appropriate.

p.2

need to do better?

n The manager, who is also the owner of the setting, often works directly with children. This means that, at times, she has insufficient time to focus on her management role. For example, on occasion, weaker teaching is not swiftly identified, and targeted training is not provided. This negatively impacts on the quality of education. n Staff read books and help children to re-enact the main events of well-known stories. Younger children explore books during one-to-one sessions with a member of staff. However, overall, the curriculum for communication and language is not implemented consistently well. For example, staff do not ensure that children who communicate less are supported as much as possible. n Although children have some opportunities to be independent, staff do not always help them to enhance their skills. For example, at times, staff take over and do not challenge all children to pack toys away or put their coats on before

they go outside. n Children benefit from fresh air daily. They go to play in the nearby community playground, where they swing and slide on the available equipment. Staff

need to do better?

24 November 2022 encourage children to practise their physical skills indoors as they stretch and practise poses during a yoga session. Younger children use balance beams to support their coordination. n Staff provide opportunities for children to practise their small-physical and mark- making skills. For example, children make marks with pencils. Children strengthen their small-muscle skills while rolling and patting play dough and exploring with sand. Staff help children to practise their cutting skills, as children are learning to use scissors. n Children visit local shops and learn about road safety. However, staff do not always organise the day and prepare activities well. Children often have to wait, with limited activities to engage in. This negatively impacts children's concentration levels and their attitudes to their learning. n Staff introduce children to other cultures beyond their own so they can begin to

develop awareness of similarities and differences. For example, staff encourage children to learn songs to celebrate Christmas. n The key-person system currently in place does not ensure that care is tailored to the individual needs of children. On occasion, staff do not spend quality time with their key children and do not swiftly respond to non-verbal cues. Consequently, children's learning needs are not consistently met. n Staff teach children about healthy food and practices that support physical health. For example, staff encourage children to follow the hygiene routines, such as washing hands before meals. However, their own practice needs further improvement, especially regarding the cleanliness of the area where the food is being prepared. n Parents are generally happy with the nursery. They access information about their child's day via an online application and during collection and drop-off

times. They feel engaged in their children's development. Parents praise the approachable staff and management.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The manager and staff fully understand their roles and responsibilities in keeping children safe. They can identify signs and symptoms of when a child may be at risk of harm. They have a secure understanding of the reporting procedures to follow if they are concerned about the welfare of a child in their care. They attend regular safeguarding training to keep their knowledge up to date. All staff hold paediatric first-aid certificates. This helps to ensure that they are able to deal with any accidents and incidents when they occur. They carry out daily risk assessments and remove potential hazards in order to keep children safe.
