p.1

Context and focus of visit

From October 2018, Ofsted undertook to carry out monitoring visits to all newly directly funded providers of apprenticeship training provision which began to be funded from April 2017 or after by the Education and Skills Funding Agency and/or the apprenticeship levy. This monitoring visit was undertaken as part of those arrangements and as outlined in the ‘Further education and skills inspection handbook’, especially the sections entitled ‘Monitoring visits’ and ‘Monitoring visits to providers that are newly directly publicly funded’. The focus of these visits is on the themes set out below.

p.2

Context and focus of visit

Go Beyond Services Limited is an independent learning provider based in London. It is part of a larger organisation that provides consultancy and commercial training services to clients in a range of sectors.

p.2

Context and focus of visit

At the time of the monitoring visit, nine apprentices studied on standards-based apprenticeships in level 5 improvement specialist or level 6 improvement leader. All apprentices were aged over 19 years old. Go Beyond Services Limited has one subcontractor, Penshaw View, that provides training for apprentices in English and mathematics.

p.2

Insufficient progress

Leaders have not established robust quality improvement arrangements and so do not have a comprehensive understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of training. For example, leaders had not previously identified that too many apprentices do not receive appropriate advice and guidance at the start of their programmes. This hinders apprentices’ ability to establish if the apprenticeship meets their needs.

p.2

Insufficient progress

Leaders have not put in place suitable arrangements to manage the quality of subcontracted training. They have not established arrangements to assure the quality of apprentices’ experience while studying English and mathematics with the subcontractor.

p.2

Insufficient progress

Leaders and trainers do not have a secure understanding of apprentices’ progress. While they monitor apprentices’ readiness for their final assessment, they do not monitor their progress across the skills, knowledge and behaviours within the standard. As a result, leaders, trainers and apprentices are often unsure of the progress apprentices are making. Monitoring visit: Go Beyond Services Ltd, 20 and 21 October 2022 Leaders and trainers have adapted the curriculum to meet employers’ and apprentices’ needs. For example, trainers explore specific aspects of lean and agile management techniques in more detail in response to employer requests.

p.2

Insufficient progress

Leaders have put in place suitable arrangements for apprentices to be assessed at the end of their programme. Trainers work effectively with apprentices to prepare them for their final assessments. As a result, apprentices have a good understanding of what they need to do to pass these assessments.

p.3

Insufficient progress

Leaders and trainers work with employers to ensure that apprentices participate in sufficient and suitable off-the-job training. Trainers are highly qualified and possess relevant industry experience. Leaders and trainers have developed high-quality electronic resources that aid apprentices’ learning.

p.3

Insufficient progress

Trainers do not take sufficient account of apprentices’ prior experience and qualification when planning training. As a result, a small number of apprentices receive training on topics they already know, which slows their progress.

p.3

Insufficient progress

Trainers do not consistently plan training well so that all apprentices’ learning builds over time. They do not provide enough opportunity for apprentices to consolidate their learning. Leaders and trainers do not ensure that apprentices’ on- and off-the- job training is suitably aligned. Consequently, apprentices often struggle to understand and apply key theoretical concepts as part of their job role.

p.3

Insufficient progress

Trainers do not check apprentices’ understanding of topics sufficiently. This results in apprentices having gaps in their knowledge that prevents them from successfully learning more challenging concepts. Consequently trainers have to repeat teaching content unnecessarily, which slows apprentices’ progress.

p.3

Insufficient progress

Leaders have not established appropriate safeguarding procedures. Leaders have not ensured that apprentices know who to contact in the event of them having a concern about their safety or well-being.

p.3

Insufficient progress

Leaders have not taken reasonable steps to meet the requirements of the ‘Prevent’ duty. They have not completed a risk assessment to identify the potential risks arising from radicalisation and extremism. Leaders have not ensured that apprentices understand the dangers from radicalisation and extremism that are relevant to the Monitoring visit: Go Beyond Services Ltd, 20 and 21 October 2022 areas in which they work and live. Furthermore, leaders have not taken steps to ensure that the subcontractor is adhering to the ‘Prevent’ duty guidance. Monitoring visit: Go Beyond Services Ltd, 20 and 21 October 2022 regulates and inspects to achieve excellence in the care of children and young people, and in education and skills for learners of all ages. It regulates and inspects childcare and children’s social care, and inspects the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service (Cafcass), schools, colleges, initial teacher
