p.1

The provision is good

Children are happy and enjoy their time with the childminder and her assistants. They confidently go up and down the steps as they move between the indoor and outdoor areas of the childminder's home. Children are learning how to keep themselves safe. The childminder provides a stimulating home-from-home environment for children. From a young age, they show high levels of engagement as they explore the activities available to them from the well-resourced environment. For example, children excitedly explore the real leaves and acorns, as well as the pretend bugs in the large, heavy-duty plastic tray. They identify and discuss the different sizes of the ladybirds. Children enjoy counting the spots, saying '1,2,3,4'. This builds on their early mathematical skills and communication and language development. Children make good progress in their learning and development. The childminder has high expectations for all children. Children are

encouraged to identify their needs and make independent choices. For instance, children make suggestions about what they would like for breakfast. This builds on their self-esteem. The childminder encourages children to learn the importance of sharing and taking turns with their friends. They listen and behave well for their age. For example, young children are reminded how to sit safely at the table during activities. They receive regular praise and encouragement for their efforts.

need to do better?

n The childminder is ambitious and motivated. She works closely with the co- childminder and assistant to evaluate the setting. They read articles and updates to explore how to develop the curriculum. For instance, they introduce new resources to the outdoor environment to build on children's physical skills. However, the childminder has not built on her professional development. This would support her further in raising the quality of her teaching and help children make good progress. n The childminder provides pre-school children with activities and books to read at home. This helps prepare them for school. The childminder has a range of age- appropriate diverse books. However, books are not easily accessible at the setting as they are too high. As a result, the childminder does not consistently promote a love of reading by providing children with frequent opportunities to hear stories read aloud. n The childminder supports children's good health and independence. instance, children learn from an early age the importance of handwashing before snack and mealtimes. They have a wide selection of fruit to encourage their healthy eating. Children develop their communication and language skills, as they discuss what snacks they enjoy. In addition, they use the teeth activity and poster to learn about the importance of good oral health. n Children benefit from a wide range of interesting and challenging activities that

19 October 2022 cover all areas of learning. The childminder encourages children to learn about nature and caring for the natural world. For example, children enjoy going with the childminder and her dog to the park. They collect leaves and acorns which they add to activities at home. Children grow a range of fruit and vegetables and learn about life cycles. They have fun playing with magnifying glasses in the garden and exploring insects. They learn about the wider world beyond their own. n Support for children's personal, social and emotional development is good. The childminder observes children and knows them well. She plans activities following children's interests and developmental needs. For example, older children are supported as they prepare for a new baby in the family. They play with different baby dolls in the home corner and take books home which teach them about having a new baby. All children, including those who receive

additional funding, make good progress from their starting points. This helps raise their confidence and self-esteem. Children's behaviour is good. n Children enjoy the exciting outdoor area. They have lots of opportunity to be physically active. Children develop a can-do attitude to climbing and balancing as they manage their own risks safely. For instance, young children manoeuvre different trikes around the garden. Older children climb the wooden boat and slide. This contributes to the good progress children make in their physical development.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder and the assistants know how to identify if children are at potential risk of harm or abuse. They keep their safeguarding knowledge up to date through regular reading. The childminder knows where to report concerns about children's safety or if an allegation of abuse is made against an adult or the childminder's family. This helps to promote children's safety. The childminder maintains a safe and secure home. She uses stairgates and teaches children how to behave safely with the family dog. The childminder completes regular risk assessments of her premises and garden. This helps to keep children safe.

should:

n enhance the use of professional development to focus more precisely on building knowledge and understanding, in order to continuously raise the quality of teaching n provide opportunities for children to develop a love of books and reading by increasing the access they have to explore a range of books and to ensuring they hear stories being read aloud.
