Information about this inspection
Inspectors have looked closely at the experiences and progress of children, using the social care common inspection framework. This assurance inspection was carried out under the Care Standards Act 2000 to assess the effectiveness of the service, how it meets the core functions of the service as set out in legislation, and to consider how well it complies with the Children’s Homes (England) Regulations 2015 and the ‘Guide to the Children’s Homes Regulations, including the quality standards’. Assurance inspection report for children's home: 2661371 2
p.1
Findings from the inspection
We did not identify any serious or widespread concerns in relation to the care or protection of children at this assurance inspection.
p.2
The care of children
Children’s experiences are enhanced by living at this home. They enjoy a wide range of activities with staff. There is a personalised approach to children’s development needs, for example, one child is learning to spell his name using rap. Children’s achievements are proudly recognised and celebrated with staff.
p.2
The care of children
The staff have built positive relationships with the children. There is a consistent staff team in place and this has had a positive impact on children. The staff have regular key-work sessions with children and tailor these sessions to children’s current behaviours, their health needs, and goals and plans for the future.
p.2
The care of children
Children receive well-planned care. One child who has recently moved into the home is engaging well with the staff and making progress. Both children are attending some education. The registered provider advocates strongly for children, to enhance their access to and engagement in education.
p.2
The safety of children
Staff understand the vulnerabilities of the children and there are effective risk plans in place to reduce risks and to provide guidance to staff on how to support children.
p.2
The safety of children
The registered manager is proactive in ensuring children are educated about known risks, for example, liaising with the local police and arranging for them to visit the home and meet with the children.
p.2
The safety of children
There have been no incidents that have resulted in the use of physical intervention. Behaviour plans for children are updated following incidents and used as reflective learning during team meetings. However, consequences for children are not always restorative in nature or proportionate to children’s behaviours.
p.2
The effectiveness of leaders and managers
The registered manager has established effective systems to monitor the care provided to the children. This is complemented by the responsible individual’s oversight.
p.2
The effectiveness of leaders and managers
All staff have attended mandatory training and there is a new monitoring system in place to ensure this is regularly updated. This means the registered manager can easily identify training needs for the team and take action to resolve any gaps. All staff are enrolled on the relevant diploma course and are making progress. Assurance inspection report for children's home: 2661371 3 Supervision for the manager has improved in frequency and quality. This has provided a reflective space for the registered manager, and she feels supported by her senior leaders.
