p.2

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The home is large and well maintained, providing a safe and homely feel. Children have developed trusting relationships with the staff. One child said, ‘We have a laugh, but also talk about serious things.’ The manager and staff speak highly of the children and provide them with love and support. As a result, children like living at the home.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children and staff have regular helpful key-work discussions. When recorded by staff, they are written directly to the child. The manager reviews each record and adds her feedback and any required actions. This ensures that the manager is aware of the sessions with children and staff learn from her guidance.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children’s care plans are child focused. The staff and management have high aspirations for the children. The plans clarify how staff should care for each child to meet their identified aims and objectives. Therefore, staff are clear about how to help children achieve and thrive.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The staff enable the children to access health services. Extra support has been given when this is difficult for a child. Staff encourage healthy eating and activities that provide exercise. Referrals for specialist help are made when required, especially with regards to the mental health of children. The staff help children to lead a healthy lifestyle.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The staff team has worked hard to ensure that children have positive educational opportunities. They have been successful in helping a child back into school. Another child was helped to gain college placements. Staff are encouraging and celebrate achievements. The action that staff take improves outcomes for children.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Risks affecting children are identified and assessed well. Staff are aware of the existing and potential risks for each child. How staff should recognise and respond to risky situations has been clearly recorded. Guidance helps staff to work in a way which keeps children safe. One social worker said, ‘What I see in terms of risk is they are completely on it. The [child] self-harm has decreased, and he will always go to staff. They genuinely care about him.’

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Staff manage children’s behaviour well. They are trained in the de-escalation of incidents. A member of the team has completed the training course to directly teach other staff the home’s preferred behaviour management approach. This has meant that triggers are recognised early, and incidents have not required the use of physical intervention. Inspection report for children’s home: 2683445 4 Safeguarding incidents have been well managed. Incident reports are detailed and have management oversight recorded on each one. Additional actions, such as debriefs, are identified to support children and staff. This is aided by a useful incident checklist. As a result, staff develop their understanding and practice with regards to keeping children safe.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Children have not gone missing from care. However, there are clear protocols in place should this happen. Where appropriate, children have time seeing friends, without staff, in line with their care plans. This allows children to develop independence in a planned way and have social opportunities.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

A mental health practitioner provides regular support to staff. Staff can discuss their needs around their work with children and the impact situations can have on them. The practitioner also provides training for staff, which is planned throughout the year. Staff can discuss their needs, identify training, and be signposted to other help and support. This develops staff’s resilience for helping and protecting children.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager’s monitoring and quality assurance of the home is very good. She is supported by the company’s quality intervention manager. Plans, assessments and reports are reviewed by the manager. A quality improvement plan draws together the findings from the various processes used. This ensures that all areas of the home are monitored.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

There are clear development plans for the home and workforce. These are informed by the quality improvement plan. Training needs are identified. There are clear actions taking place to develop staff practice further. This includes the introduction of journals to help staff record their work with children in line with the principles of the home’s therapeutic model.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager has ensured that regular supervision sessions are held for all staff. They are reflective sessions, and actions are identified and reviewed the following month. The manager has introduced supervision books to be used for supervision, training and meetings. These include an action tracker from supervision. This helps with the development and support of the staff team.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager is supported well by the responsible individual. There are regular recorded supervisions, with targets and plans clearly identified. As a result, the responsible individual knows the children and the staff well and has clear expectations and views for further development.

p.4

The effectiveness of leaders and managers: good

The manager is aware of her strengths and weaknesses, and those of her team. She is reflective. Staff say that the manager and team leaders are very supportive and want the best for the children. This has created a positive and caring atmosphere, with high morale and staff who like working at the home. Inspection report for children’s home: 2683445 5
