p.1

The provision is good

Children happily arrive at this childminding setting. They settle in quickly when they first start as they receive a warm welcome and affection from the childminder, her assistant and the co-childminder. Children learn to share and negotiate with one another as they play. They understand what is expected of them and behave well. Children show positive attitudes towards learning because the childminder has high expectations of them. They are inquisitive learners and explore the childminder's home and garden with curiosity and enthusiasm. Children focus for a long period of time when they engage in activities. For example, when they make creative pictures out of small pegs. Children show a high level of imagination as they play. For instance, they pretend to make a castle when they play with soft blocks. Children can name simple shapes and learn to count in sequence. They actively play outdoors and master their physical skills.

p.2

The provision is good

Children understand how to keep safe. For example, they learn that only one child can access the trampoline at a time, and they patiently take turns. Children benefit from a healthy and nutritious diet throughout the day. This contributes to their good health and wellbeing. All children, including those who learn English as an additional language, develop skills they need for future learning and the move to school when the time comes.

need to do better?

n The childminder regularly reviews the quality of the setting and seeks the views of parents, staff and children to identify and make improvements to benefit children. n The childminder kept in touch with children and their families during the COVID- 19 pandemic. For example, she provided activities for children and parents to complete together at home to complement children's learning. The childminder reassessed children's development on their return and remained focused on supporting children's social development and emotional needs. n Although the childminder formed trusted partnerships with parents, and they speak highly of her, she does not share information about children's progress and their next steps as regularly as parents would like. Nevertheless, she ensures they regularly discuss children's care needs. n The childminder has effective systems in place for safe recruitment and for ensuring staff's ongoing suitability to work with children. However, she does not

21 September 2022 planning for their next steps. Children take part in a broad range of activities and experiences, which they enjoy. n The childminder and her team encourage children to manage simple tasks themselves to build on their independence. Examples include children's play, mealtimes, hygiene routines and dressing. This helps children prepare for the next stage in their development. n The childminder uses opportunities as they arise to build on children's mathematical skills. For example, when children play with blocks, she questions them about shape, size and colour. n The childminder and her team use positive praises, and this helps children develop a high level of confidence and self-esteem. n The childminder wants children to be physically active, including indoors. For example, she encourages children to use large movements and practise jumping and stomping as they pretend to be bunnies and elephants.

need to do better?

n Children enjoy a range of group activities, including rhymes and circle time, and patiently wait for their turn to say 'hello' to their friends. They listen attentively to stories and pretend that they are 'going on a bear hunt'. n The childminder ensures that all children feel valued and respected. She proactively uses some words in children's home language to support their communication and language development. The childminder provides opportunities for children to develop an understanding of what makes them and their families unique. For example, they use family photos to initiate discussions with children about their families. Children, including those who learn English as an additional language, develop a sense of themselves.

Safeguarding

The childminder has a clear understanding of her role and responsibilities to keep children safe from harm. The childminder ensures that her staff know the procedures to follow if they have a safeguarding concern. The childminder and her staff carry out daily risk assessments to ensure that the premises are safe and suitable for children to use.
