p.1

The provision requires improvement

Children are settled and content in the childminder's care. The childminder is warm and friendly. She builds positive relationships with children and their families. The childminder meets children's care needs sensitively. She supports them to manage their own self-care during routines, including washing their hands before eating their meals. As a result, children are developing independence and confidence.

p.2

The provision requires improvement

That said, the childminder's curriculum is not clearly focused and well-balanced enough. The childminder does not take opportunities to guide children's learning successfully through the use of well-thought-out adult-directed activities. Furthermore, the childminder does not provide older children with enough opportunities to develop their critical thinking skills. As a result, on occasions, children lose focus and concentration or give up on their ideas. This does not help ensure they gain new skills and develop understanding of broad concepts ahead of their future learning.

The provision requires improvement

Nevertheless, children generally have fun and enjoy their time with the childminder. The environment is well-resourced and the childminder ensures items of key interest are continually accessible, such as pretend vehicles. Children's love of transport is evident as they play with cars of varied colours and size. The childminder teaches children to share and take turns with support. They work collaboratively with each other to make a road for their vehicles out of sticky tape.

need to do better?

n The childminder is passionate and strives to be ambitious. Since the last inspection, she has worked closely with the local authority to raise the standards of her safeguarding and welfare practices. The childminder is currently working towards an early years degree. However, she does not yet put all of her professional development into practice effectively enough to fully improve the quality of education. n The childminder knows children well and uses her assessment of their abilities to identify the key next steps in their learning. However, the childminder has not yet created an entirely successful curriculum. For example, she readily abandons adult-led planned activities without trying them. This means, overall, children do not make as much progress as possible. n The childminder does not provide enough opportunities that support older children to develop strategies for doing things, exploring their ideas and solving
