p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Since the home was registered, two children have lived in the home. One child has now left, having spent only a short period of time living there. However, the staff took all necessary steps to ensure that the welfare of the child was prioritised.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The child currently living in the home has been there for five months. The manager undertook a detailed assessment to understand the needs of the child before their move to the home.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Education in the home is promoted and staff are ambitious for the child to achieve. A professional said, ‘Staff have provided good support to the child for their recent mock examinations.’ Consequently, the child is learning the importance and value of attending education.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Children’s health needs are met. Staff support children to attend all routine health appointments, including specialist services to support good mental health. The child has taken part in a wide range of activities and has successfully completed a climb on Snowden with staff. This helps the child lead a healthy and active lifestyle.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

Staff understand the importance of family time. The child is supported to keep in contact with family members. A professional was complimentary towards staff for making all necessary arrangements. As a result, relationships with family have improved.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The home is well maintained and in keeping with a family home. The child has helped to personalise her room, completing colourful pieces of artwork around their culture and diversity. There are photographs and memory books in the home that capture the child’s journey. This helps the child have a strong sense of identity, and staff say they have seen the child grow in confidence.

p.3

Overall experiences and progress of children and young people: good

The child is encouraged regularly by staff to express their wishes and feelings. This is done through daily conversations and weekly meetings. Recently, the staff sourced support from the local community listening service. This gives the child greater access to discuss important matters around her emotional well-being.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Safeguarding practices in the home are good. The child is helped to stay safe through good-quality direct work which is meaningful and relevant to them. Inspection report for children’s home: 2662813 4 When a previous child went missing from care, staff took steps to locate the child and ensured that safety was paramount. However, the manager should ensure that when a child goes missing from care there is an opportunity for them to receive a return home interview conducted by a person who is independent of the home.

p.3

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Risk and behaviour management plans are regularly reviewed, and the plans are well written. Staff are aware of the child’s risks. Positive behaviour is promoted, and staff have a good understanding of the child’s behaviours and are consistent in their approach to providing care. Consequently, restraints in the home are not required. Furthermore, staff can explain what action they would take should a child protection issue occur.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

When incidents of self-harm arise, staff, and the manager, promptly seek appropriate support for the child. They speak to the child to understand the triggers to these incidents and put safeguards in place, such as room searches. These are to help prevent further incidents occurring and are completed respectfully.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

All staff are suitably trained in administering medication, and there are safe medication practices in the home. Additionally, each staff member is required to complete a series of medication competencies. This helps to enhance staff skills and knowledge and helps to keep the child safe.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

The home has a suitable complaints procedure in place. When complaints have occurred, these have been appropriately managed.

p.4

How well children and young people are helped and protected: good

Recruitment practices are safe. The manager ensures that all necessary checks are completed before staff start work in the home. This helps to ensure that adults working with children are safe to do so.

The home is led by a suitably qualified and experienced manager. The manager also has management responsibility for another home which is close by.

p.4

Staff make use of good-quality supervisions, regular team meetings and daily handovers. As a result, the team has been able to have the opportunity to come together and reflect following a difficult period, and share information effectively. Inspection report for children’s home: 2662813 5 The manager has a system in place for monitoring staff training, which is effective. When necessary, she has delivered various workshops to staff to enhance their knowledge, such as managing diabetes, promoting positive emotional health and well-being. This ensures that all staff are well equipped to meet the child’s individual needs. Inspection report for children’s home: 2662813 6
