p.1
The provision requires improvement
Children are happy and settled with the childminder. They smile and laugh together as they join in with some of the actions to rhymes, such as jumping. Children confidently ask for help from the childminder and her assistant when it is needed. For instance, when they require support after care routines they shout out 'I've finished'. Children enjoy engaging in sensory activities, such as sand play. They happily fill and empty the different containers. However, the childminder does not plan challenging experiences that effectively build on what children already know and can do. Consequently, children do not make the full progress in their learning they are capable of.
p.2
The provision requires improvement
Children behave well. The childminder uses praise and encouragement to promote positive behaviours and children respond well to this. Children enjoy being creative as they paint pictures with their peers. However, the childminder and her assistant do not consistently provide children with good quality interactions. This means that, at times, children's learning is not supported well enough to consolidate their knowledge and help them to make good progress. That being said, children who speak English as an additional language are well supported by the childminder. For instance, she is multilingual and speaks most languages of the local community. The childminder also finds out key words from parents and uses this to communicate with the children and to interpret their wishes.

need to do better?
n The childminder attends training, such as first aid and safeguarding. She completes some professional development to improve her knowledge. However, this is not fully effective in helping to build on her knowledge and skills. The childminder does not use effective supervisions to identify areas of development for her assistant. She does not successfully coach the assistant to enhance their practice. The quality of teaching and education that children receive is not consistently good. n The curriculum covers all areas of learning. However, the childminder does not ensure that her curriculum is challenging enough to build on what children know and can do. She does not use her observations and assessments of children's achievement to plan activities that fully support children to make the progress they are capable of. That being said, the childminder recognises that she can receive support from health visitors and general practitioners, if there are

concerns in a child's development. The childminder carries out care plans where needed to identify where children may require extra support. n The use of stories and books to develop children's language skills and for them to learn new vocabulary is not good enough. Although children are given access to books, adults use this as a quiet time, rather than a learning opportunity. For

need to do better?
27 June 2022 example, adults do not have discussions with the children about the story they are looking at. When adults do read stories, they do not read with expression to stimulate or excite children to develop a love of books. n Parents speak positively about the childminder. They say they are kept up to date about their child's learning. The childminder provides activities that parents can use to support their child's learning at home. Parents comment that their child loves to attend every day. The childminder finds out about children's starting points from parents. This helps her to understand children's likes and interests. n The childminder ensures that children learn about what makes them unique. However, she does not provide enough opportunities for children to learn about other people, such as exploring their similarities and differences, to help prepare them for life in modern Britain. n The childminder encourages children to wash their hands throughout the day.
p.2
need to do better?
She uses this as an opportunity to teach them how they can keep themselves clean and promote their health. The childminder undertakes regular fire drills to ensure that she can leave the building safely in an emergency situation. This helps children to understand what to do in an emergency. n The childminder recognises immediately when children become upset and responds well to them. She uses this time to teach children about their emotions.
p.3
Safeguarding
The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.
p.3
Safeguarding
The childminder and her assistant have a suitable understanding of safeguarding. They identify a wide range of different signs and symptoms of abuse, including the 'Prevent' duty and female genital mutilation. The childminder also understands the need to monitor children's absences. The childminder and her assistant have a secure understanding of the steps they should take to keep children safe from harm. This includes getting advice and making referrals to those with statutory responsibility. The childminder knows the steps she should take if an allegation is made against herself or her assistant. She undertakes risk assessments to ensure that her home is safe and suitable.
