p.1

The provision is inadequate

Children's safety and their opportunities for learning are compromised. The childminder's knowledge of safeguarding is not secure. Her understanding of what she wants the children to learn is poor.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

The childminder does not have a clear understanding of how to help young children to learn. Babies are encouraged to learn about numbers and colours. This is not age-appropriate and is too challenging for them. Consequently, children lose interest in the activities the childminder provides. They quickly become bored and frustrated, at times resulting in poor behaviour. Children do not learn about appropriate ways of sharing toys. This is because the childminder interrupts their play. For example, without explanation, she takes toys away from the quieter children and gives them to the more demanding children.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

Children's language development is not supported by the childminder. For example, she uses phrases such as 'ba baas' and 'din dins' when talking to the children. This does not help very young children to learn and understand a good range of words and how to pronounce them correctly.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

That said, children do show that they are comfortable with the childminder. They seek the childminder out for reassurance and respond positively to her praise and cuddles.

p.2

need to do better?

n Children are at risk of harm because the childminder does not have a secure knowledge of all safeguarding practice. Despite completing safeguarding training, she does not have a clear understanding of her role to protect children. For example, she lacks a secure knowledge of the 'Prevent' duty and how to recognise and protect children and families from being radicalised. Furthermore, she is not confident in her knowledge about recognising when a girl might have been subject to female genital mutilation. n The childminder has completed a wide range of training online about learning and development. However, she is unable to put her new knowledge into practice. The childminder does not understand how children develop and what she needs to do to support the next steps in their learning. Her assessment from her observations of children's play and interests is vague. This means that when she plans activities they are not age-appropriate and she expects too much of

children for their age and stage of development. n The childminder does not provide children with exciting and interesting ways to learn. The childminder's interaction with children does not support their development. This, in particular, is with regard to how the childminder models

24 June 2022 language to them. She does not repeat words or use words correctly to teach children, especially the very young children, good vocabulary. n Although the childminder provides some activities that she knows children are interested in, they do become bored or distracted, quickly lose interest and learn little. Sometimes, in their frustration, young children throw toys. The childminder does not help children to understand that this is not acceptable and uses words, such as 'Naughty' and 'No', to manage the situation. This also has a negative impact on other children, who then become upset and stop playing. n When children do have focus in their learning they enjoy exploring with bricks and posting different shapes into holes. The childminder sits on the floor with the children and praises them for their achievements saying, 'Well done' and 'Clever boy.' n The childminder adheres to children's specific dietary requirements. She gathers

the information from parents and makes sure children are provided with a healthy snack and meals to promote their health. n The childminder does not have complaints information accessible for parents to view as required by the Childcare Register. This means that if parents have any concerns they do not know what the correct procedure is to follow and how their concern will be dealt with.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has limited knowledge of the signs that indicate a child may be at risk of being radicalised with extremist views, or if a girl is subject to female genital mutilation. Furthermore, the childminder does not understand her responsibilities under the 'Prevent' duty. That said, she does know how to recognise other signs of abuse and knows she must report her concerns straight away. The childminder supervises children closely. She completes risk assessments of her home, garden and for her pets to make sure children are safe.
