p.1

The provision is inadequate

The childminder has not kept her knowledge of the Statutory framework for the early years foundation stage up to date. There are significant weaknesses in her knowledge of how to plan and assess for children's learning. Children do not make the progress of which they are capable, particularly in communication and language because the childminder has a weak understanding of this area of learning. Despite this, children enjoy their time at the childminder's. They laugh as the childminder paints their hands. They demonstrate they are happy as they settle to sleep as the childminder sings to them and rubs their back. Parents feel that their children are well cared for. They know that their children are safe. They say that their children enjoy going to the childminder's, asking if it is one of their days.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

The childminder does not have high enough expectations of children's behaviour. Children do not consistently understand what the childminder expects of them. Children get inconsistent messages about what is right and wrong. Sometimes, when children say 'No' the childminder does it for them. Children are safe in the childminder's home. She supervises them well outside and when they are eating.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder's assessment is poor. She does not identify where children are in their learning. This means that she does not identify where there are significant emerging concerns regarding children's development. n The childminder's curriculum is poor. She does not identify what children need to learn next. While children enjoy activities, such as messy play, the childminder does not know about what children need to learn. As a result, she focuses on teaching children about colours and shapes when they do not have the language for this. In addition, the childminder does not respond quickly enough when children show they are bored, and this impacts on their behaviour. n The childminder does not have a good enough understanding of how she can support children's communication and language. She does not identify when children are not making the progress they should. In addition, the quality of her interactions do not support children to make the progress of which they are

capable. For example, she speaks in long sentences and does not help children to expand their vocabulary. n The provider does not ensure that she keeps her knowledge and skills up to date, particularly in relation to her teaching. She has failed to develop a good enough understanding of the statutory framework. For example, she is not aware of her duty to complete a written summary of children's progress between the ages of two and three. n Children behave well for the majority of the time. However, occasionally, children get bored and this impacts on their behaviour. When this happens, the

need to do better?

22 June 2022 childminder does not consistently help children to manage their own behaviour. For example, she does not respond quickly enough when children get excited with racquets. Because of this, they hit racquets that others are holding, getting progressively harder and faster. Children do not learn clear messages about acceptable behaviour or respect. n The childminder does not share or gather enough ongoing information from parents to ensure she meets children's needs effectively. For example, she does not share enough information about children's communication and language to help children to catch up. In addition, she does not gather enough information from parents or other professionals that are involved with children to provide high-quality support. This impacts on the progress children make. n Children enjoy some aspects of their learning. For example, they enjoy painting outside. They explore the colours and marks they can make with brushes and

sponges. They demonstrate reasonable concentration for their age as they paint on the paper and then on the floor. n Children learn about how they can keep themselves healthy. The childminder provides children with plenty of drinks. They have healthy snacks and get plenty of fresh air and exercise. The childminder ensures that children wash their hands before eating.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has a good understanding of safeguarding. She knows the procedures to follow if she had a concern about a child. She knows who she would contact if she had concerns about a child. She has kept her child protection training up to date. This means that she has a good awareness of wider safeguarding issues, such as the 'Prevent' duty guidance or child exploitation. Children are safe in her home. For example, she locks her door to prevent unauthorised access to the premises. She supervises children well, inside and outside.
