p.1

The provision is inadequate

The childminder is in breach of several of the requirements of the early years foundation stage relating to risk assessment and promoting children's health. Hazardous cleaning materials are stored within easy reach of children. Furthermore, the childminder is not following her safeguarding policy regarding the use of mobile phones in the setting. The childminder's assistants leave their personal mobile phones switched on in the room where children learn and play. These breaches have a negative impact on the quality of care and education that children receive.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

The childminder and her assistants give children mixed messages about acceptable behaviour. For example, when children are moving from one routine activity to another, they run and jostle for space. This happens when they go to the bathroom outdoors and while arranging themselves for circle time. In addition, children snatch toys and other resources from their friends. The childminder and her assistants are not consistently proactive in addressing this and encouraging acceptable behaviour. This negatively impacts on children's behaviour.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

The childminder and her assistants build and maintain secure relationships with children. Children enter happily and greet familiar friends and caring adults. They settle quickly and understand the routines. For example, they choose what they would like for breakfast, demonstrating a sense of belonging and security in the childminder's home.

p.2

need to do better?

n The curriculum is weak and does not support all children's language development. The childminder and her assistants do not have consistently high expectations of the children. For example, during focus activities, the oldest children in the setting are not supported to speak in sentences. The childminder and her assistants do not make opportunities to purposefully extend their vocabulary. This does not fully support children's communication and language skills. n The childminder provides healthy snacks and cleans the table before children sit down to eat their lunch. However, the childminder does not consistently promote good health and hygiene practices that reduce the spread of infection. For instance, children play with toys at the table that are not clean and have been outside. Therefore, children are not learning the link between good hygiene practices and good health. n Children have opportunities throughout the day to make the most of the outdoor

area. The childminder has made enhancements with the addition of a large awning to give more shade and space for children to play and learn. However,

need to do better?

20 June 2022 some paving stones are slightly raised. The childminder is aware of this and plans are in place to ensure that children and adults are safer in the outdoor area. n Children independently wash their hands before meals and after using the bathroom. Some children successfully peel their own fruit at snack time and put the waste into bins. However, snack time begins noisily, and children take a long time to settle down as the childminder and her assistants fail to organise children who are shouting over each other and moving around. This does not help children to concentrate and enhance their independence skills. This has a negative impact on their personal development. n The childminder carries out risk assessments, but these are inconsistent in ensuring and maintaining children's safety. For example, the childminder adheres to children's sleep routines and monitors them as they sleep. However,

doors swing open and closed, which poses a risk of children catching their fingers and causing other injuries. This has an impact on children's health and safety. n The childminder and her assistants support children to develop their small and large muscles. The children have opportunities to scoop, mix, pour and squeeze. Children also learn to use cutlery at mealtimes. Children use climbing apparatus in the outdoor area and musical instruments. This helps them to develop the muscles that they need for more complex tasks. This has a positive impact on their physical development. n The childminder shares information with parents about their child's day. She talks to them about activities that their children enjoy and how to support their learning at home. This promotes consistency in the children's learning.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder ensures that children are not left alone with adults who do not have a current and valid Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. However, the childminder has not ensured that Ofsted is notified of all changes to the household, and there are missing details relating to adult household member's DBS checks. The childminder demonstrates that she is aware of how to notify Ofsted of important information, but does not always do so in a timely manner. Staff have a secure knowledge of child protection and the processes for making referrals if they have a concern about a child or adult.
