p.1

The provision is good

Children are very happy in the childminder's care. Toddlers demonstrate this as they snuggle on her knee and explore sound books together. They beam with delight as they explore the different sounds together. Babies leave their parents happily, and quickly settle and explore the toys. The childminder has high expectations for children's learning. She places a high priority on children's language and literacy. The childminder talks about the value of books and songs. Toddlers concentrate intently as they look at books with the childminder. They thoroughly enjoy looking at animals and singing songs to accompany the stories. Older children enjoy 'book time' when they come in from school. Parents value this ethos and comment that even as children get older, children still make time to look at books.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder helps children to understand how they can keep themselves safe. For example, toddlers learn how to go up and down steps carefully as they go into her garden. They learn how to wash their hands thoroughly from an early age. The childminder teaches children how they can keep themselves safe online. She encourages children to talk about their feelings. Older children talk to her about their worries or fears. The childminder's advice and support helps them to navigate everyday issues, including friendships and social media.

n The childminder has thought carefully about the sequence in which children develop their literacy skills. The books she uses are carefully selected to develop children's love of books in an age-appropriate way. Toddlers delight in looking at textured books. Older children listen to simple stories. This helps children develop a love of books. n The childminder knows what she wants children to learn and focuses activities on the development of these skills. Recently, she has focused on helping toddlers to develop their physical skills. The childminder uses visits to the park and soft play to support children's large-muscle skills. This helps children to develop their balance and coordination. n Children are, generally, engaged in their learning. The childminder knows what children are interested in and plans activities to support their interests further, particularly indoors. For example, she has children's favourite books out and

activities related to children's favourite television characters. However, children do not demonstrate the same levels of engagement when playing in the childminder's garden. They move quickly between different activities because the childminder provides too many activities to choose from. This impacts on children's concentration outside. n Children behave well. They respond well when the childminder says 'No'. The

need to do better?

16 June 2022 childminder ensures that children know what she expects. For example, she tells children to come 'back on the grass'. This helps children to follow her instructions. The childminder knows children well. She identifies that when children are tired, sometimes their behaviour deteriorates. The childminder acts quickly when they show signs of tiredness to prevent this happening. n The childminder supports children's language effectively. She adapts her language when talking to young children effectively. For example, the childminder uses single words to extend children's vocabulary. This has a significant impact on children's language development. n The childminder works effectively with local schools. She finds out what children have been doing in nursery and builds on this further in her home. For example, the childminder continues to talk about numbers as children are out and about to develop their learning in school further. She communicates with staff

effectively to establish a consistent approach to managing issues, such as the development of language or toilet training. n The childminder has a good relationship with parents. She talks to them about what children are doing and how they can support them further. The advice and support she gives to parents is a strength of her setting. For example, parents speak highly of the support they received when children were undergoing medical treatment. The childminder provides ongoing support to families on a range of issues, including suitable books, dummy sucking and games. This helps children to make very good progress from their starting points in their learning. n The childminder evaluates her provision effectively. She knows what she does well, and she has identified how she can improve further. The childminder has taken effective action to address the weaknesses of her last inspection. She has attended a range of training to ensure that she meets children's needs

effectively. The childminder is committed to ensuring that her knowledge continues to improve and has identified further training, such as early writing, to develop her practice further.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder has an excellent understanding of the signs and symptoms that may indicate that a child has been subjected to abuse. She has a good understanding of the procedures she would follow if she had concerns about a child. The childminder has recently updated her safeguarding knowledge, and this has had a significant impact on her understanding of all safeguarding issues, including female genital mutilation and child exploitation. The childminder ensures that her home and garden are safe. For example, her garden is secure, and she has clearly defined areas of her garden for the use of scooters and general play.
