p.1

The provision is inadequate

Children's health and safety is not fully assured because the childminder does not keep accurate records of when children are in her care. This means that in the event of an emergency, children may not be accounted for. When children have accidents in the setting they are cared for by the childminder, and their emotional and physical needs are met. However, the childminder cannot produce the documentation required during inspection to demonstrate that accidents are recorded as they should be. This is in addition to other required documentation which is unavailable for review when requested.

p.2

The provision is inadequate

Children enjoy playing alongside their friends. They engage in activities which the childminder has themed around topics that interest them. For example, children play together and develop their imaginations while running their pretend library. They use their real-life experiences from when the childminder has taken them to the local library as inspiration for their play. However, at times, children's behaviour deteriorates and they lose focus in their activities. They do not always receive the time or attention that they need from the childminder to be fully supported in their learning and development.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder does not keep the required daily register detailing the times of when children arrive or when they leave her care. This potentially puts children at risk in the event of an emergency or a safeguarding concern. n The childminder has an online software application to keep records of children's accidents. However, she does not have the knowledge or understanding to use this confidently. As a result, the childminder is not able to easily access accident records to make them available during an inspection. Furthermore, she is not able to produce the documentation required to demonstrate that she has adequate insurance in place to fulfil her role and run her setting. n The childminder has considered how she can support children's literacy development. For older children, she schedules time in the daily routine for them to complete their reading homework and read aloud to the childminder and their

friends. This benefits younger children too, as they listen to a variety of stories told each day. Younger children share books with the childminder as part of their 'calm time'. This offers children the opportunity to connect reading with their emotional development. The childminder organises weekly trips to the library for children to foster this love of books further. This extends children's experiences even more. n The childminder collects children from school and nursery every afternoon. On the way home, she encourages children to share their experiences of what they have done that day. This should support younger children to develop their

14 June 2022 communication and language skills. However, the childminder has not considered the best ways for this activity to be successful. She provides children with noise-making toys to occupy them as they travel. The childminder and children then struggle to hear others talk and they are unable hold a conversation over the noise being created. Children do not consistently follow the childminder's instructions to limit the use of these toys. n The childminder offers children a snack of fruit and raw vegetables. This helps children to learn about what makes a healthy diet. Children independently wash their hands before they eat, showing that they can take care of their personal care needs. However, the childminder gives inconsistent messages about where children can eat. Sometimes children are allowed to play while they eat their snack, whereas at other times the childminder asks children to sit at the table

and eat from a plate. This is confusing for children as they develop their understanding of rules and boundaries. n Parents say that the childminder plays an important role in making sure there is effective communication between home, her setting and the children's school and nursery provision in which they spend their day. This means that children receive continuity of care throughout.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are not effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder is unable to safeguard children fully because she does not keep a daily register, meaning children's whereabouts cannot be evidenced. The childminder has a secure knowledge of child protection. This includes recognising when a child may be at risk of harm in their home or community. The childminder knows what to do if she has a concern of this nature in the way of keeping children safe. The childminder understands the 'Prevent' duty guidance. She can explain the signs that might suggest a family is being drawn into terrorism. The childminder provides a risk-free environment for children to play in.
