p.1

The provision is good

The curriculum supports children's self-expression and their physical and creative development well. Older children experiment with a range of media and materials. They use both hands to squeeze paint from a bottle and use their fingers to mix colours together. Older children recognise light and dark shades of colour. They develop their ideas about how to use paint and what to make. Older children decide to paint a crown and sword when they talk about the colour gold and the Queen's Jubilee. They make their own decisions to add detail, such as jewels, to their creative work. Older children use malleable materials safely and with increasing control.

p.2

The provision is good

The childminder has high expectations for children's learning. Children are very happy and show how they feel safe in her care. They show consistently positive attitudes to their play and learning. Children behave extremely well.

p.2

The provision is good

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, the childminder has continued to support children's development. She provided parents with website links to physical activities children could do at home, such as yoga disco. She also delivered learning packs that included home-made play dough. The childminder acknowledges children's and parents' anxieties as a result of the pandemic. She now gathers very detailed information about children's individual needs and has also extended her settling-in sessions. The childminder provides emotional support to the whole family exceptionally well.

p.2

need to do better?

n The childminder is aware of the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on some children's personal development. She supports children extremely well to follow mealtime routines and to sit at the table to eat with their friends. The childminder also takes children to local cafés. Children have excellent opportunities to practise their social skills. n The childminder provides healthy, balanced and nutritious meals. She gives children the opportunity to try food they may not have at home, such as lobster. Children also try food that supports their understanding of different celebrations. For example, they taste haggis when they learn about Burns Night and try dim sum when they celebrate Chinese New Year. n Babies enjoy the physical contact, attention and affection they receive from the childminder. They have adequate, clean floor space to experience time on their tummy and back. The childminder offers this play frequently to babies

throughout the day. She helps to develop their core strength, coordination and positional awareness. n Toddlers stand on a see-saw and use their legs to rock backwards and forwards.

p.2

need to do better?

25 May 2022 They climb up the steps of the slide unaided and use their balance skills to sit down at the top. Toddlers show the physical risks they are confident and able to take. n Older children negotiate what they will do next in their play. They wait for each other to speak, and they listen carefully to their friends. This is because the childminder supports children to carry out their decisions, while also respecting the wishes of the rest of the group. The childminder is an excellent role model. Children show superb respect for their friends. n Children have daily opportunities to explore their local community and extend their knowledge of the wider world. They visit local parks, country houses and industrial museums. Children learn about nature and how transport has changed over the years. n The childminder supports children's speech development very well. She provides children with extensive opportunities to use and embed new words in a range of

contexts. For example, the childminder uses the word 'crustaceans' when she talks about seafood and 'erupt' when she speaks about volcanoes. n Parents write that they are 'grateful for the wonderful childcare' provided by the childminder. They say how she incorporates a good mixture of indoor and outdoor activities. Parents write how their children 'thrive' in their learning. They also acknowledge how consistent and reliable the childminder has been throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. n The childminder is currently working towards a recognised early years qualification. She reflects on her practice to continue to build on her knowledge and skills. However, the childminder does not yet have a precise enough focus on her strengths and areas for development to raise the quality of education to the highest level. n The childminder provides a broad curriculum that covers the seven areas of learning. She regularly assesses children's learning to make sure that they make

good progress. However, she does not always identify how she can challenge older children's critical thinking through their next steps in learning.

p.3

Safeguarding

The arrangements for safeguarding are effective.

p.3

Safeguarding

The childminder talks confidently about what she will do in the event of a concern about a child in her care. She has very good knowledge of the signs and symptoms of abuse. The childminder is aware of the indicators that may suggest that a child is at risk from child protection issues, such as extremist views and activities. She completes regular training and keeps up to date with local safeguarding reporting procedures. The childminder knows how to respond in the event of an allegation against her or her co-childminders. Children play in a safe and secure environment.

p.3

should:

25 May 2022 n refine the planning of older children's next steps and increase the opportunities for them to use their critical thinking skills n develop self-evaluation practice to precisely identify areas for improvement to raise practice to an even higher level.
